2021 Toyota Supra: More power, better handling

Extra stock and power hike confirmed for Toyota’s born-again performance coupe

Those who rushed to get their hands on the brand-new Toyota Supra when it arrived last year may well be kicking themselves now.

That’s because Toyota Australia has just confirmed that a new batch of Supra stock is on the way – followed by a more powerful version with a new suspension tune that will bring “more track focused handling”.

Bringing the Toyota Supra in line with the recently updated BMW Z4, its mechanical twin, a 35kW power hike for the Supra’s 3.0-litre inline turbo six means the upgraded model will deliver new outputs of 285kW of power and 500Nm of torque.

Therefore it’ll likely also shave some time off the sports car’s 0-100km/h sprint figure, which currently stands at 4.3 seconds.

The updated 2021 Toyota Supra will also receive an updated suspension set-up, including the addition of under-bonnet chassis braces for increased rigidity.

While the current Toyota GR Supra range is priced from $84,900 (plus on-road costs) for the base-model GT and $94,900 for the top-spec GTS, the bad news is the Japanese car maker says these prices will likely increase once new models arrive in late 2020.

In the meantime, Toyota Australia has managed to snavel more stocks of the current Supra, which is available in showrooms now. However, these models continue to offer only 250kW.

When it was launched here last June, the first allocation of 100 examples was sold in just seven minutes in a randomised online ballot. As many as 5000 potential buyers vied for the first 300 vehicles that Toyota said it had secured for Australia in the first 12 months, leading to a long waiting list.

Toyota Australia now says it has delivered 345 Supras to the end of January, and that anyone interested in the current or upgraded model should visit their local dealer ASAP.

Exact arrival timing, pricing and numbers have yet to be confirmed for the 2021 Supra, but Toyota says availability is expected to more limited.

Toyota Australia says it won’t import the lighter 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder (190kW/400Nm) version of the Supra, but a hot 300kW-plus GRMN version is expected to top the range later on.
