2021 Volkswagen Golf R teased again

Flagship Golf hot hatch rebrands for 2021; set for more power, better performance and under-the-radar Q-car looks

A new image of the Volkswagen Golf R has been released ahead of its November 4 unveiling, revealing fresh R badging for 2021.

The new R logo has also appeared on the VW R performance brand's official Instagram channel and could herald a future change in direction for the go-faster division, including the much-rumoured branching out to pure-electric models based on the ID family.

For now, though, it's business as usual for the Golf R.

Shunning even mild-hybrid electrification, it's already known the flagship based on the Mk8 Volkswagen Golf will feature an upgraded version of the last model's 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine.

Early leaks suggest a power boost to 245kW and 420Nm of torque – a big step up on the 213kW/380Nm the current generation musters.

Set to be available as both a hatch and a wagon, the new Volkswagen Golf R should be capable of a 0-100km/h sprint in just 4.4 seconds. A limited top speed of 250km/h is anticipated.

The 2021 Volkswagen Golf R will continue to come standard with VW’s 4MOTION all-wheel drive system, combining with a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic. There’s no word if the six-speed manual version will live on.

Inside, the new Golf R’s cabin is dominated by a pair of sporty supportive bucket seats and the regular Mk8 Golf’s huge centrally-mounted infotainment system.

Externally, the 2021 Volkswagen Golf R's styling has already been leaked, and aside from a new near-full-length LED light bar and a large rear spoiler and diffuser, the design doesn't shout too loudly that it will be one of the fastest VW hot hatches ever made.

Once it's unveiled this week, European deliveries will begin in early 2021, around the same time the new Volkswagen Golf GTI arrives Down Under.
