2022 Ford Mustang revealed

Mustang still running hot in Oz with MY22 series adding Line Lock function and GT California Special

Ford Australia has put to rest rumours of its pony car being sold out until the next generation, announcing pricing and spec details of the updated 2022 Ford Mustang that’s due in showrooms in the second quarter of next year.

While the line-up is largely as you were from the 2021 model year in terms of variants, there has been a change at the top of the range with the limited-edition Mach 1 being replaced by the cosmetically-enhanced GT California Special.

Priced from $67,280 plus on-road costs in manual Fastback form, the 2022 Ford Mustang GT California Special is an even $2000 upstream of the equivalent regular V8 model, with all three familiar configurations – manual Fastback, auto Fastback and auto convertible – getting the stylistic makeover.

See our full price box below, but in exchange for the extra two grand, customers are treated to a black grille and intake mesh devoid of the usual pony badging, a unique stripe decal down the flanks of the car and a set of chunky ‘rear fender scoops’ for an added bit of muscularity.

If you somehow miss these alterations, bright red ‘GT/CS’ badges have been fitted at the front, side and rear of sports car.

While the bigger front splitter from the GT Performance Package is already standard on all Aussie-spec Mustangs, there are unique five-spoke 19-inch alloy wheels, while a bigger ‘performance’ rear wing is also optionally available.

The ‘GT/CS’ treatment is continued inside with the logo embossed into the suede-trimmed seats and door cards.

Unlike the Mach 1 it replaces, the Mustang GT California Special hasn’t been treated to any mechanical upgrades, meaning the 5.0-litre V8 continues with the familiar 339kW/556Nm output.

As for the rest of the line-up, all Australia-bound variants have inherited the track-only Line Lock function which helps drivers “heat up the tyre rubber for improved traction” immediately prior to a race start.

The new feature has predictably driven the Mustang’s asking price up, with increases across the range of $1100.

That means the entry-level 2.3-litre High Performance Fastback manual now starts from $52,590 plus on-road costs. Automatics still carry a $3000 premium.

The colour pallet has also been expanded and refined for 2022 with 11 colours to be offered in total.

Given the new-generation ‘S650’ Mustang is widely tipped to be revealed next year and launch locally in 2023, we wouldn’t be surprised if a few limited-run enhancement packs or another couple of variants emerge over the next 12 months as Ford keeps interest up in the ageing S550 model.

Our money would be on the sinister-looking Stealth Edition Appearance Package making its way Down Under sometime next year to help shift the remaining 2.3-litre Fastbacks given the pack was revealed in tandem with the California Special back in October.
