Mazda Australia is preparing to launch an updated Mazda2 range that will be headlined by a sporty new G15 Pure SP hatch.
The latest SP variant to join the Mazda ranks this year after the Mazda6, CX-5, CX-8 and, just this week, the BT-50, the 2022 Mazda2 G15 Pure SP features a variety of sportier treatments including black 16-inch alloy wheels, black side mirrors and grille and a chrome exhaust extension.
Inside, the theme continues with black cloth upholstery with red trim accents.
The SP is based on the entry-level Mazda2 G15 Pure hatch but, despite the sporty pretensions, will not be available with the six-speed manual gearbox as found on the regular Pure.
Instead, the only transmission available on the SP is the more popular six-speed automatic that combines with an (unchanged) 82kW/144Nm 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine.
The SP joins the broader MY22 Mazda2 hatch and sedan range that includes rear seat belt reminders for the first time (now required under Australian Design Rules) as well as a new Platinum Quartz Metallic paint option.
Elsewhere, the Polymetal Grey exterior colour already available on Mazda2 hatchbacks for an extra $495 becomes optional on the sedan for the same price.
Model pricing is still to be announced for the MY22 update, but shouldn’t stray too far from the current Mazda2 range that opens at $20,990 plus on-road costs.
Given the current G15 Pure auto ($22,990) and the Evolve ($24,490) are separated by only $1500, we’d expect the SP to slot in between with a circa-$1000 increment over the Pure.
Mazda Australia says the 2022 Mazda2 will be in showrooms before the end of the year.
