Swedish premium brand Polestar has announced that its recent Precept concept will inspire the new Polestar 3, an SUV that will take the battle to Tesla's Model S and the Jaguar I-PACE.
Originally it was thought the striking Precept might preview the Polestar 4 but, according to design boss Max Missoni, it's the next Polestar 3 that will borrow much from the well-received show car that was originally created for the ill-fated Geneva motor show.
The Polestar 3 is due to go on sale in 2022.
“The next car that Polestar will launch is the Polestar 3. It will be a high performance SUV, that is a different car in its body style, but I would say the Precept serves as a precursor to the design language that you will see in that car,” Missoni told
.According to the chief designer, the Polestar 3 will closely resemble the concept, although the Brit mag suggests the next battery-powered model will be Tesla Model S-sized and feature a more overt SUV stance.
“We are not over-promising. This is quite a realistic statement of our future,” claimed Missoni.
There's no word on any technical details, other than an expected 500km range.
It's also unclear what platform a large pure-electric Polestar would sit on since its parent company large SPA architecture, that underpins the XC90 SUV, has not been designed for full electric cars.
Instead, it's thought the smaller CMA the Polestar 2 is based on might be enlarged for the 3.
Features set to make it to production are the Precept's roof-mounted LiDar unit and the SmartZone that features two radar sensors and an HD camera, plus an array of other sensors where a traditional grille would be.
Inside, the concept's advanced 15-inch portrait-mounted infotainment system, along with a 12.5-inch digital instrument panel, will also carry over and run Google Android operating system.
Video cameras are expected to replace traditional door mirrors, while the flax-based composite body panels and interior made from recycled PET bottles should all reappear on the production Polestar 3.
What isn't expected to make it for production is the pillarless construction and rear-hinged doors.
Set to be produced at the car-maker's new manufacturing hub in Chengdu, China, the Polestar 3 is set for a late 2021 reveal with sales scheduled to start in early 2022.
