2022 Subaru BRZ teased again
Another new glimpse of second-gen coupe, this time hooning on mountain roads in the USSubaru has released a fresh teaser of its second-generation Subaru BRZ coupe being driven hard in the mountains ahead of its official reveal on November 18.
The latest glimpse of the undisguised BRZ still doesn't quite reveal the entire 2022 Subaru coupe, but does show the Toyota 86 sibling doing what it does best – going very sideways.
Following on from an earlier tease that revealed the BRZ's reshaped headlights, the biggest take-away from the latest video is the new model's soundtrack.
Turn up the volume and you'll hear the unmistakeable sound of a naturally-aspirated engine being revved out, proving that the Subaru and Toyota twins will once again shun turbos.
That's because the new 2022 BRZ is set for Subaru’s newer, more powerful 2.4-litre four-cylinder FA24 boxer engine.
The sleek Japanese twins should crank out at least 162kW of power and 240Nm of torque. This compares with the current 2.0-litre boxer engine’s 147kW/205Nm.
As with the current model, the new engine is expected to be combined with both a manual and automatic gearbox, the latter tipped to switch to a continuously variable transmission (CVT).
Later on in the video, it's also just possible to make out the sleek two-door's silhouette that looks similar to the current car.
Beneath the skin, the latest reports from Japan indicate the two affordable coupes have not switched to Toyota’s newer, more advanced TNGA platform and will instead use a development of the current platform to reduce costs.
Once revealed in the coming days, our sources suggest that both the new Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86 will roll into Australian showrooms around November next year – some three months later than the August arrival previously anticipated.
The Subaru BRZ is currently priced from $35,270 plus on-road costs and the Toyota 86 opens the ledger at just $32,180 – cheaper than some top-spec small hatchbacks.
