2023 Audi A8 and S8 pricing revealed

Heavily upgraded Audi A8 claimed to offer segment-first technology and new levels of luxury

Audi Australia has announced pricing and specification details for the facelifted 2023 Audi A8 and its performance-oriented Audi S8 sibling.

Due to arrive in local showrooms from mid-November, the 2023 Audi A8 range is described by the German prestige car-maker as a “technological masterpiece”, retaining its place as the technological, luxury and engineering flagship as it reaches the midway point of its current generation.

It will do battle with the incoming all-new BMW 7 Series and BMW i7, plus the latest Mercedes-Benz S-Class and Mercedes-Benz EQS, but Audi is notably still without a full EV option…

The new Audi A8 range opens at $202,700 plus on-road costs with a long-wheelbase Audi A8L priced at $222,700 plus ORCs – an increase of about $10,000 apiece over their immediate predecessors.

Audi has also announced pricing of $273,400 plus ORCs for the Audi S8, which we’ll detail further below.

Thought to be the final new combustion-engine iterations of Audi’s A8 range as the car-maker commits to an electrified future, the facelifted Audi A8 and Audi A8L are both powered by 3.0-litre 50TDI V6 diesel engines outputting 210kW and 600Nm.

Augmented by a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, the diesel produces a 0-100km/h claim of 5.9 seconds and has an average fuel consumption rating of 6.6L/100km on the combined cycle.

The Audi A8 and A8L send drive to all four wheels via the quattro all-wheel drive system, with a self-locking differential fitted standard.

Adaptive air suspension is also standard fare, ditto progressive variable-ratio steering.

The Audi A8 is visually differentiated from its predecessor with a larger single-frame grille and larger air intakes up front, plus new digital Matrix LED headlights which feature a digital micromirror device (DMD) that employs 1.3 million micromirrors to break down the light into tiny pixels and offer more precision at night.

From the side, the A8 purportedly adopts more of a coupe roofline, plus muscular wheel-arches housing new wheel designs, while at the rear there are new animated tail-lights.

Standard items on the garden-variety Audi A8 are headlined by the fitment of an S-line exterior package for the first time, digital Matrix headlights, OLED rear lights, 20-inch alloy wheels (larger than before), comfort contour front seats with ventilation and massage, extended leather interior in Nappa leather, colour ambient lighting, heated steering wheel, heated front arm rest and park assist plus – a claimed $22,000 in additional specification over the previous model.

Those features are over and above other regular features including: metallic paint, head-up display, alarm, acoustic glazing, power-assisted door closing, four-zone climate control, electric luggage compartment lid, Matrix LED reading lights, heated front seats, Bang & Olufsen 3D sound system, a 12-inch virtual cockpit display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, rear seat remote.

On the safety front, the Audi A8 now boasts 40 driver assistance systems built into it.

For its $20,000 premium, the long-wheelbase Audi A8L adds an additional 13cm in length plus added equipment including dynamic rear-wheel steering and heated rear seats.

Meantime, the Audi S8 builds on A8 equipment suite by adding a black styling package as standard, or a matte aluminium package at no extra cost, together with flourishes of carbon-fibre inlays inside and dynamic all-wheel steering.

Mechanically, the S8 draws power from a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine producing 420kW and 800Nm, offering an official launch time of 3.8sec to 100km/h and a combined fuel consumption figure of 10.5L/100km.

Additionally, the S8 also scores an electromechanical sport differential, predictive air suspension which primes the suspension for bumps in the road ahead – using a front camera and hydraulic actuators on all four wheels to provide softer progress, plus pitch reduction, automatic levelling through corners, roll stabilisation and novel features including ‘elevated entry’ mode, which raises the car by 50mm within half a second of opening the door.

Other standard equipment highlights include 21-inch Audi Sport wheels, red brake callipers, privacy glass for the rear side and rear windows, S sport front seats with diamond quilting, carbon-fibre inlays on the dashboard and gear selector, Dinamica headlining, air quality package, adaptive windscreen wipers and Audi virtual cockpit plus, Night vision with digital marking light, digital TV, black styling package and a heated sport steering wheel.

The Audi A8 and S8 are both backed by a five-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty and five years’ roadside assist. There’s also the option of a five-year service plan available on the A8 for $3830.
