2023 BMW X1 and iX1 cop hefty price hike

No extra gear to ease price rises of up to $6500 as incoming BMW iX1 EV actually loses standard kit

BMW Australia has increased pricing by as much as $6500 across its 2023 BMW X1 range, including the soon-to-be-launched battery-electric BMW iX1.

Pricing for the internal combustion variants now opens from $60,400 plus on-road costs for the entry-level sDrive18i and tops out at $73,400 plus ORCs for the xDrive20i M Sport, marking increases of $6500 and $5500 respectively.

The mid-range xDrive20i also rises $5500 to now start from $70,400 plus ORCs.

There are no corresponding boosts in standard equipment levels, while the incoming BMW iX1 now carries a sticker price of $84,900 plus ORCs – up $2000 from when the order book opened late last year.

What’s more, standard equipment in the iX1 has been lowered.

Using BMW’s online configurator, if prospective buyers select metallic paint, the panoramic sunroof, Harman Kardon sound system and active seats with massage function, these now feature as part of a new optional Enhancement Package costing $4700.

A spokesperson for BMW Australia declined to comment on the specification change, but said the altered iX1 pricing came into effect in January.

“The initial pricing for the BMW iX1 announced in October last year represented an introductory offer for our customers before the end of 2022, and orders placed before January 2023 were price-protected,” the spokesperson said.

“In regard to the revised pricing, it is still possible with a certain specification for the price of the iX1 to sit below the Fuel-Efficient Car LCT threshold.”

On the price hikes applied to the broader BMW X1 range, the spokesperson added: “BMW constantly reviews its pricing structure throughout the year, taking into consideration a number of different factors.

“However, we always aim to ensure our products remain appropriately positioned and represent a competitive pricing proposition in the market for our customers.”

The dual-motor iX1 xDrive30 xLine and M Sport are both on track to arrive in Australia during April, while the combustion-engined X1 range has been available since the fourth quarter of 2022.
