2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E hits the road in Melbourne

Local testing and other programs underway for Ford’s electric SUV as online order book opens this week

An undisguised 2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E GT has been spotted cruising along Melbourne’s Princes Highway, just a few days before the order book for the Blue Oval’s new EV opens this Wednesday, May 10.

The car in question was captured on dashcam and posted to the Car Spotters Australia Facebook group, where it was speculated the battery-electric SUV had been testing at Ford’s nearby You Yangs proving ground.

This appears to be the same vehicle used in conjunction with Ford Australia’s confirmation in late March that the Mustang Mach-E was officially locked in for our market.

Pricing for the Mach-E will be announced when online orders open on Wednesday, ahead of first deliveries later this year.

Ford Australia has already confirmed that the local range will span the Select, Premium and GT model grades.

The Select will be propelled by a 198kW/430Nm e-motor and draw energy from a 71kWh battery, yielding an effective driving range of up to 470km.

The Premium will also rely on a single electric motor but has a higher output of 216kW/430Nm and a longer driving range of up to 600km, thanks to its bigger 91kWh battery.

Lining up against the Tesla Model Y Performance and Kia EV6 GT, Ford’s flagship Mustang Mach-E GT features a 358kW/860Nm dual-motor/all-wheel drive powertrain that can dispatch 0-100km/h in 3.7 seconds and cover 489km on a single charge.

Australia is one of the last right-hand drive markets to offer the Mustang Mach-E in the wake of huge global demand.

It’s one of at least five electrified Ford models due here by the end of 2024.

The other models include the Escape PHEV, E-Transit, E-Transit Custom and Puma EV.
