2023 Hyundai IONIQ 6: Full Australian details announced

New electric sedan to costs at least $2000 more than IONIQ 5 and $10,000 more than Tesla Model 3; orders open Feb 22

Hyundai Australia has announced local pricing and specification details for the upcoming 2023 Hyundai IONIQ 6 electric sedan which will be offered here in three guises and available to order as of February 22.

Just like the closely-related Hyundai IONIQ 5, the IONIQ 6 will be available Down Under in Dynamiq, Techniq and Epiq trim levels, with the former starting from $74,000 plus on-road costs – $2000 more than the equivalent IONIQ 5 fastback SUV.

The margins between the two e-GMP models grow to $3000 for the mid-range Techniq and flagship Epic, which start from $83,500 and $88,000 respectively.

Perhaps more importantly, the IONIQ 6’s starting price is more than $10,000 higher than the Tesla Model 3’s opening figure of $63,900 plus ORCs.

As previously detailed by carsales, every Australian-delivered IONIQ 6 is powered by a 77.4kWh lithium-ion battery pack that yields a Model 3-busting 614km WLTP driving range for the single-motor Dynamiq variant.

Predictably, that figure shrinks for the significantly more powerful dual-motor versions, but both the Techniq and Epiq will still cover up to 519km before needing a charge, and when that time comes it can be done at up to 350kW (DC) – taking the battery from 10 to 80 percent in a claimed 18 minutes.

On the subject of power, the Dynamiq features a rear axle-mounted motor generating 168kW/350Nm, compared to the dual-motors’ peak figures of 239kW/605Nm.

No 0-100km/h acceleration figures have been released for either powertrain yet, but odds are they’ll largely mirror those of the IONIQ 5 – 5.1 seconds for the dual-motor versions.

Being a $74,000-plus vehicle, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise the IONIQ 6’s standard equipment is as long as its 4855mm body, with just some of the highlights on the Dynamiq including 18-inch alloys, Bluelink connected car services, full LED exterior lighting, eco-leather upholstery, heated 10-way power adjustable front seats, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, head-up display and an eight-speaker Bose sound system.

Other headline kit includes wireless phone charging, tyre-pressure monitoring, adaptive cruise control, four drive modes, trailer pre-wiring package, powered tailgate, bio-PET carpet, dual-zone climate control, vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality, over-the-air (OTA) updates, remote start and smartphone mirroring.

Needless to say, the full suite of Hyundai SmartSense safety features are present as well, along with seven airbags.

The extra $9500 demanded by the all-paw Techniq is largely justified by its additional electric motor and the resulting performance increase, but the mid-range offering also ups the ante with 20-inch wheels shod with high-performance Pirelli P Zero rubber, ventilated ‘relaxation’ front seats, a heated steering wheel, full-width glass sunroof and heated rear seats.

Spend another $4500 on the Epiq and you’ll also score digital side mirrors, heat-pump high efficiency heater and battery-conditioning system.

Hyundai Australia hasn’t revealed how many IONIQ 6s will be offered as part of the first release on February 22, but CEO Ted Lee said the local division was excited about welcoming its second dedicated IONIQ EV.

“IONIQ 6’s 800V EV architecture is just the beginning of the advanced technology,” he said.

“IONIQ 6 showcases the Hyundai brand’s technological ambition and our commitment to developing sustainable mobility solutions, while giving customers an exciting, accessible and versatile EV.”

More details of the IONIQ 6’s local introduction will be announced next week, most likely including the initial allocation size and exact time of release.
