UPDATED 05/12/2023 3:00pm: Article now includes Australian pricing for the new five-door Suzuki Jimny XL (see below), which commands a $3000 price premium over the equivalent three-door model and has already attracted almost 3000 pre-orders.
ORIGINAL ARTICLE PUBLISHED 05/12/2023 12:30pm: The 2023 Suzuki Jimny XL has finally landed in Australia, where full details – but not pricing – were announced this morning by Suzuki Auto Co, the Japanese brand’s distributor in Queensland and Northern NSW.
Specifications for the first five-door Jimny are expected to be the same for the rest of Australia and we’ll update this story – with pricing – when Suzuki Australia announces full details later today.
The Jimny XL’s longer wheelbase, re-engineered chassis, upgraded rear seats, bigger boot, added technologies and improved safety equipment are all expected to add at least a couple of grand to the asking price of the Jimny 3-Door, which goes back on sale in auto form today.
Available exclusively in GLX form with the option of either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission, the five-door Jimny is 310mm longer than the three-door at 3985mm, with all the extra length being added to the wheelbase.
This means the familiar 37-degree approach and 49-degree departure angles are maintained, along with 210mm of ground clearance.
To maintain chassis rigidity and manage the increased payload, the Jimny XL’s ladder frame features an extra crossmember that’s paired with stronger running gear (automatic transmission and propeller shaft) and upgraded front suspension to maintain composure in all conditions.
The front suspension upgrades comprise stronger springs, recalibrated shock absorbers and a larger stabiliser bar to help deal with the extra 82kg, along with an upgraded front braking package now featuring ventilated discs for better heat management.
Upgrades have also been made within the cabin, where you’ll find a 9.0-inch (compared to 7.0-inch in the 3-Door) infotainment display, a four-speaker sound system (versus two), DAB+ digital radio, plusher and wider rear seats designed to carry people more often than not.
Another key upgrade is a new binocular camera system in place of the 3-Door’s monocular camera and a laser radar system, which means the XL scores adaptive cruise control (automatic only) and night-time pedestrian recognition.
Rear parking sensors have also been thrown into the mix as standard for the first time.
No changes have been made to the Jimny’s familiar naturally-aspirated 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, meaning the XL will deliver even less performance than the 3-Door given the small non-turbo engine is hardly a torque monster with just 75kW/130Nm on hand.
The familiar part-time 4x4 system has also been carried over untouched, meaning consumers are still presented with 2H for road use, 4H for unsealed surfaces and 4L for hard-core terrain.
Six exterior paint colours will be on offer: the established Jungle Green, Arctic White Pearl and Bluish Black Pearl hues, along with new Sizzling Red Metallic and Chiffon Ivory Metallic, which are only being offered in tandem with a Bluish Black Pearl roof.
