2024 BMW 3 Series entry price up to $94,700

Axing of BMW 320i puts circa-$100K 330i as 3 Series entry car; 330e PHEV also no longer available

BMW Australia has axed the entry-level 320i and the 330e plug-in hybrid (PHEV) from its local 3 Series portfolio, meaning the mid-size luxury sedan now starts from a hefty $94,700 plus on-road costs.

That’s the retail price for the 2024 BMW 330i, which marks a $14,500 increase over the previous entry point for the 320i and equates to about $100,000 once on-road costs are factored in.

Asked why the models were axed, BMW Australia said the move was in response to constant market evaluation and changing product strategies.

“The high volume of new BMW models introduced to the local market prompts us to constantly assess our product portfolio in line with customer demand and our commitment to offering products that suit individual needs,” a spokesperson said.

“The 3 Series line-up will comprise the successful 330i for both sedan and Touring and the M340i xDrive sedan.

“In the electrified space, we will shift our focus from the 330e plug-in hybrid to the fully electric i4 eDrive35.”

The entry-level battery-electric BMW i4 has similar outputs to the 330e – 210kW/400Nm versus 215kW/420Nm – and is a similar size, and should benefit from the fact that it starts almost $13,000 below the revised 3 Series range at $85,900 plus ORCs.

The i4 is still a long way off matching the 3 Series’ sales numbers but the recent arrival of the i4 eDrive35 should give it a booster shot, benefiting from an exemption from both luxury car tax and fringe benefits tax.

BMW’s latest moves with the 3 Series distances the Bavarian brand from its major rivals.

The Audi A4 starts from just $68,900 plus ORCs with the 35 TFSI S-line, while the Mercedes-Benz C-Class opens at $89,900 for the C 200, which now undercuts the entry-level 3 Series.

BMW says there is still a reasonable amount of 320i and 330e cars available to order, but the company will not be submitting any new factory orders if a customer’s preferred configuration is unavailable.

No changes have been made to the high-performance M3 line-up.
