2024 BMW M2 gets more grunt
Up to 15kW/50Nm added to BMW’s smallest hot coupe for the new model yearThe 2024 BMW 2 Series Coupe range has been given a refresh for the new model year and the big news is a 15kW/50Nm output increase for the flagship BMW M2.
Due to arrive in Australia in the fourth quarter of the year, the 2024 BMW M2 Coupe is now good for 353kW/600Nm in (eight-speed) automatic form, or 353kW/550Nm when fitted with the optional six-speed manual.
The twin-turbo 3.0-litre straight-six’s extra firepower sees both versions of the new M2 shave 0.1 seconds off their respective 0-100km/h times, with the manual now stopping the clock in a claimed 4.2sec and the auto in 4.0sec flat, while 0.6sec has been taken off their claimed 0-200km/h times – now 13.6 and 12.7sec respectively.
Top speed is still pegged at 250km/h for both M2 variants, but can be increased to 285km/h via the optional M Driver’s Package.
Making the most of the newfound grunt is sharper new throttle calibration in all drive modes, which BMW says yields quicker responses from both the engine and automatic transmission and makes the M2 more reactive and fun to drive.
No major changes have been made to the chassis or suspension set-ups, which means you can expect the same involving dynamics as before, but minor tweaks have been made to the exterior and interior designs.
On the outside you’ll find an expanded array of paint colours and some new alloy wheel options pinched from the M3 and M4 catalogue, while the interior updates are headlined by a new flat-bottom steering wheel plus new graphics, displays and functions for the digital instrument cluster and infotainment system, which now runs the latest BMW Operating System 8.5.
Similar changes have been bestowed upon the standard 2 Series variants, which receive the same multimedia tech update, expanded colour palette and new wheel designs, but non-M variants also score some exterior tweaks including a chrome grille surround, body-coloured side skirts and rear apron, and a black rear diffuser.
No changes have been made to any of the BMW 2 Series’ four- and six-cylinder engines, which in Australia include the petrol-powered 190kW/400Nm 230i Coupe and the 285kW/500Nm M240i Coupe (the entry-level 220i and 220d are not sold here).
Local pricing, specifications and release timing for the facelifted 2 Series Coupe line-up will be announced in July, with some mild price increases expected given the German brand’s recent form and overall market conditions.
