2024 BMW X2 revealed

Swoopy new compact SUV is significantly bigger than its predecessor and coming here early next year

The all-new 2024 BMW X2 and its first battery-electric sibling, the iX2, have made their public debuts after a short virtual teaser campaign ahead of their Australian release in the first quarter of next year.

Pricing for the petrol-powered versions of BMW’s second-generation compact SUV ‘coupe’ will start from $75,900 plus on-road costs for the base xDrive20i and top out at $92,900 plus ORCs for the sporty M35i xDrive performance variant.

Those figures mark premiums of $5500 and $2000 compared to their respective X1 wagon counterparts.

Pricing for the first BMW iX2 will be announced later this month and will likely mimic the above margins over the equivalent iX1 xDrive30, which is currently priced from $84,900.

Both new X2 variants are powered by 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engines, but their outputs vary dramatically, with the xDrive20i outputting 150kW/300Nm compared to the M35i xDrive’s 233kW/400Nm.

Common between them is an eight-speed automatic transmission and full-time all-wheel drive system, however, both systems have been tickled and fettled in the M35i.

For comparison’s sake the iX2 will dish out 230kW/494Nm but tip the scales several hundred kilograms heavier, thereby nullifying any potential performance advantage over the M-tuned car; the M35i stops the 0-100km/h clock in 5.4 seconds while the iX2 takes 5.6sec.

The EV’s dual-electric motors draw current from a 64.8kWh battery pack and will propel the small electric SUV up to 449km on the WLTP cycle.

Design-wise, BMW has tried to make the second-generation X2 look more like its bigger X4 and X6 siblings with a more rakish roofline and angular front fascia that has visual links to the flagship BMW XM.

The new model is 194mm longer than its predecessor, 21mm wider and 64mm taller at 4554mm x 1845mm x 1590mm. There’s 560 litres of boot space, extending up to 1470L when the second row is folded flat.

Standard equipment highlights in the X2 xDrive20i include 19-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control, adaptive M dampers, powered tailgate, BMW Live Cockpit Pro, head-up display, wireless phone charging, wireless smartphone mirroring, various M Sport packages and of course the previously mentioned AWD system.

The M35i, meantime, ups the ante with its more powerful engine, 20-inch wheels, 12-speaker Harman/Kardon sound system, leather Vernasca upholstery, panorama glass roof, M braking system with blue callipers, M-specific kidney, mirror caps and aerodynamic elements as well as quad exhaust tips.

Finer specification details of the iX2 will be announced along with the pricing in a few weeks.

In the usual BMW and M Sport fashion there’s arsenal of optional extras and options packages, just some of which include M Sport package Pro ($4900 for xDrive20i, no cost M35i), metallic paint ($1800) and an Enhancement Pack ($4700 for xDrive20i).

How much does the 2024 BMW X2 cost?
