2024 BYD Atto 3 updated and discounted

More tech, better tyres, a new colour and lower prices announced for popular small electric SUV

BYD Australia has announced an update for its inaugural model less than two years after its local release in August 2022, with the 2024 BYD Atto 3 mid-size electric SUV now receiving a host of equipment upgrades and price cuts of more than $3500.

The updates include a new 15.6-inch infotainment system, wireless Apple CarPlay, karaoke function and a new ‘Camping Mode’ that allows the climate-control system to be activated while the car’s turned off.

Other upgrades for the 2024 BYD Atto 3 include Continental tyres and updated ‘BYD’ lettering.

A new exterior paint colour, Cosmos Black, has been added to the existing palette and can be had with the choice of a black or dark blue interior to match.

Pricing for the revised Atto 3 starts at $44,990 plus on-road costs for the Standard variant, while the Extended grade now costs $47,499 plus ORCs.

Those prices mark a shock discount of $3512 for both variants as the EV price war between GWM, BYD, MG and Tesla continues to rage in the lead-up to myriad other Chinese auto brands entering the Australian market over the next 18 months.

The price cuts aren’t enough to see the Atto3 hassle the MG ZS EV for the title of Australia’s cheapest electric SUV, but they do mean it’s now within spitting distance of entry-level hybrid and plug-in hybrid medium SUVs like the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, Haval H6 Hybrid and MG HS Plus EV.

The BYD Atto 3 comfortably remains the cheapest and only battery-electric model in the sub-$60,000 medium SUV segment, massively undercutting pricier rivals like the Tesla Model Y, Hyundai IONIQ 5, Subaru Solterra and Toyota bZ4X.

The incoming XPeng G6 could be a chance to disturb the peace, however – as could the upcoming SsangYong Torres EVX.

No changes have been made to any of the Atto 3’s mechanical or chassis components, meaning the Standard variant still outputs 150kW/310Nm and draws current from a 50.1kWh battery pack, while the Extended features a bigger 60.1kWh battery.

Effective ranges are rated at 400km and 480km respectively.

How much does the 2024 BYD Atto 3 cost?
Standard – $44,990 (-$3512)
Extended – $47,499 (-$3512)
* Prices exclude on-road costs
