Chinese EV powerhouse BYD has debuted an all-new compact electric SUV positioned below the established BYD Atto 3 in terms of both size and price, but at this stage it’s not expected to come to Australia.
The model in question is the 2024 BYD Yuan Up, which takes on a far more rugged persona compared to the urban-minded Atto 3, though you would never describe it as a Jeep or Dacia rival.
Underpinned by the same e-Platform 3.0 architecture as the Atto 3 and new BYD Dolphin hatch, the Yuan Up rides on a 2620mm wheelbase and measures 4310mm long, 1830mm wide and 1675mm tall, which makes it roughly the same size as the Hyundai Kona and therefore very much a small SUV as opposed to a light one.
The Atto 3, for reference, measures 4455mm, 1875mm and 1615mm respectively, and has a 2720mm wheelbase.
Detailed technical data for the Yuan Up is yet to be announced but Chinese homologation intel has thus far revealed the inclusion of 70kW and 130kW single-motor powertrains and a maximum driving range of up to 401km for the most frugal version.
That maximum range figure is provided by a 45.1kWh Blade battery pack, but there is also a smaller (and cheaper) 32kWh unit that provides around 300km of range, though both numbers have been calculated using Chinese testing cycles and are therefore a bit more generous than the WLTP or ADR cycles.
Despite the circa-¥100,000 ($A21,642) expected starting price, the Yuan Up packs plenty of technology into its cabin, where highlights include an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, wide-screen infotainment interface, multi-function steering wheel, head-up display, leather-like upholstery, phone projection, LED lighting, sport-style front seats and a 60:40-split folding second row.
Higher grades meantime add a fixed glass roof, premium upholstery, power-adjustable seats, premium sound system and more.
BYD Australia has confirmed there are no immediate plans to launch the Yuan Up in this market, where its focus remains firmly on the existing Atto 3, Dolphin hatch and Seal sedan, and the introduction of a new mid-size electric SUV and dual-cab 4x4 ute later this year.
