2024 Chery Omoda 5 range expands to four

Chinese small SUV gets a bigger engine and more toys for its second year Down Under

The local Chery Omoda 5 model range has doubled in size for 2024, with Chery Australia confirming a four-pronged line-up and drive-away pricing for the new model year, with the small SUV portfolio now crested by a bigger 1.6-litre turbo-petrol powertrain.

The gutsier new engine has been on the horizon for a while and is now available exclusively in the top-spec GT grade with the option of front- or all-wheel drive, the latter of which won’t hit showrooms until next month.

Happily, the front-drive version is already entering Australian dealerships, with pricing set at $38,990 drive-away for the GT 2WD and $41,490 for the GT AWD.

The existing 1.5T BX 2WD and EX 2WD, meantime, start from $34,490 and $36,990 respectively, with all grades scoring digital radio, a frameless rear-view mirror with auto-dimming function and a more powerful 50W wireless device charger.

No changes have been made to the carried-over variants’ 1.5-litre turbo-petrol package, which continues to output 115kW/230Nm and drive the front wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

The same self-shifting unit is paired with the new 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine, which outputs 137kW/275Nm and consumes between 6.8L/100km (FWD) and 7.4L/100km (AWD) on the combined cycle.

CO2 emissions, meantime, are pegged at between 162-176g/km, while the 1.5T variants’ torsion beam rear-end has been swapped out for a more sophisticated multi-link arrangement.

“The MY24 Omoda 5 represents another step forward for the Chery brand in Australia, offering consumers more performance and choice whilst maintaining the focus on value for money and Chery’s dedication to outstanding customer service,” said Chery Australia managing director Lucas Harris.

Chery delivered 5370 Omoda 5s in 2023 (after going on sale in March), accounting for 3.7 per cent of the sub-$45,000 small SUV segment – a share it’s no doubt hoping to increase in 2024 as it gains more traction by expanding its line-up.

How much does the 2024 Chery Omoda 5 cost?

1.5T EX 2WD – $36,990
