The 2024 Chery Omoda 7 has been teased for the first time ahead of its global reveal at the Beijing motor show on April 28, and simultaneously locked in for Australian release in the second half of this year.
Positioned above the established Chery Omoda 5 small SUV, the Omoda 7 will more than likely compete in the mid-size SUV segment alongside the Chery Tiggo 7 Pro but offer a sportier look and disposition in the same vein as the Haval H6 GT.
Indeed, the singular teaser image showcases a sporty silhouette with tapered roof and window lines, leaving minimal glass behind the C-pillar to create a classic coupe-style SUV.
Toyota employs a similar strategy in the small SUV segment with its volume-selling Corolla Cross and nippier-looking C-HR, while the aforementioned H6 GT shares the medium SUV segment with the standard H6.
“Launching at this year’s Beijing Auto Show, the Omoda 7… aims to introduce a refreshing aesthetic to the SUV market,” Chery Australia said.
“Every angle exudes style; the front face is distinctively sharp, the side profile boasts an elegantly smooth waistline, while the lightning tail-light design conveys the power of technology and grace.”
The Chinese brand is also promising big things from the Omoda 7’s standard technology and safety suites, declaring technology will be a key component of the Omoda portfolio’s identity.
Odds are the Omoda 7 will be powered by the same 1.6-litre turbo-petrol engine recently added to the smaller Omoda 5 range, outputting 137kW/290Nm and driving either the front or all four wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
The all-new Omoda 7 will bring to four the number of SUV models offered by Chery Australia before the end of this year, following the Omoda 5, the Tiggo 7 Pro and the larger seven-seat Tiggo 8 Pro Max, which arrives this month.
In addition, the battery-electric Omoda E5 will become Chery Australia’s first EV in July and the fledgling Chinese brand will this year also release the Jaecoo J7 premium mid-size SUV, based on the Chery TJ-1 revealed in China in 2023 and powered by a more powerful 145kW/290Nm 1.6-litre engine.
The plug-in hybrid Tiggo 7 Pro e+ and Tiggo 8 Pro e+ are also under consideration for Australia.
