2024 Ford Mustang Dark Horse revealed with Aussie carbon wheels
Geelong’s Carbon Revolution is providing optional carbon-fibre hoops for Ford’s upcoming new Mustang flagshipFord Australia and Carbon Revolution have showcased what the flagship 2024 Ford Mustang Dark Horse will look like when it’s fitted with optional five-spoke carbon-fibre wheels ahead of the model’s release here later this year.
The single-piece 19-inch hoops are said to be 37 per cent lighter than traditional wheels – shaving 9.1kg of unsprung weight per set – and to have undergone more than 200 tests to pass Ford's own structural and environment regulations.
The new Mustang Dark Horse is the fourth collaboration between the Blue Oval brand and the Geelong-based carbon-fibre specialist, following the Ford GT supercar, Shelby GT350R and Shelby GT500 CFTP.
Designers say the five-spoke layout of the wheels honour the heritage and designs of previous Mustangs while featuring cutting-edge innovations like ‘plasma arc spray’ technology – ceramic and metal-based heat protection – traditionally associated more with the aerospace industry.
Other features include Carbon Revolution’s Diamond Weave Technology, lug nuts mounted between the spokes and blue carbon-fibre detailing to match the Dark Horse’s exterior and interior trim highlights.
Pirelli P Zero Trofeo RS tyres can be seen encompassing the wheels in the official press images, suggesting the hoops and uprated rubber will be offered as a package deal similar to the 18-inch alloy wheel and all-terrain tyre combination available on the Ford Everest off-roader.
Local pricing details for the new S650-series Mustang, including the Dark Horse flagship and its optional carbon wheels, are yet to be announced by Ford Australia.
However, a recent leak out of the US indicates a $US57,970 ($A83,871) starting price for the new Mustang flagship in its native market.
Said flagship is powered by an overhauled version of the Ford Mustang’s familiar 5.0-litre ‘Coyote’ V8 developing 373kW/566Nm, compared to 358kW/563Nm for the S650 Mustang GT.
The entry-level Mustang HP four-cylinder, meanwhile, will develop 235kW/475Nm and all variants will remain rear-wheel drive with the option of a six-speed manual or 10-speed automatic transmissions.
