A year after its release in Europe, the 2024 Ford Transit Custom is now available to order in Australia ahead of first deliveries in the second quarter of next year.
That’s a few months later than anticipated, but Ford Australia has now detailed the local line-up and pricing for the new-generation mid-size commercial van, which will be available in a single model grade (Trend) and short and long wheelbase lengths.
The 2024 Ford Transit Custom Trend SWB is priced at $55,990 plus on-road costs, while the Trend LWB carries a $1000 premium, starting at $56,990 plus ORCs.
The pricing represents an increase of almost $6000 over the previous generation.
It’s also well upstream of key rivals including the Toyota HiAce LWB (from $47,120) and Hyundai Staria Load (from $46,240), but still undercuts the Mercedes-Benz Vito (from $64,480).
A smaller sibling to the larger Transit, the Transit Custom is built on an all-new platform but uses a carryover 125kW/390Nm 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel that drives the front wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Claimed fuel consumption is pegged at 8.0L/100km (ADR Combined). Four drive modes are available – Normal, Eco, Slippery, Tow/Haul.
The SWB Transit Custom offers 5.3 cubic metres of load space, while the LWB can hold 6.8 cubic metres.
With a load-through feature under the seats employed, the Transit LWB has a maximum load length of 3450mm, with 3050mm available on the SWB.
Both models have a 2500kg maximum braked towing, while payload is 1223kg for the SWB and 1269kg for the LWB van.
Ford says its engineers have worked hard to improve the ergonomics of the Transit Custom, both in the cab and load bay with new touches including a lower floor, cargo area access step, 180-degree reversing camera, walk-through cabin layout, shorter front overhang and the latest cabin tech.
Infotainment is based around a new 13-inch touch-screen and the SYNC4 operating system, with smartphone mirroring, sat-nav, a brand-first 5G embedded modem and FordPass connectivity all included.
Other standard equipment highlights include wireless phone charging, a 12.0-inch instrument cluster (with digital display), load area protection kit, LED load space lighting and fabric upholstery.
Headline safety gear comprises pre-collision assist with autonomous emergency braking (AEB) and intersection assist, reverse AEB, blind spot information system, rear cross traffic alert, adaptive cruise control and a roof-mounted airbag for the passenger.
Dual side load doors (without windows) are a $1000 option, while white is the only no-cost exterior paint option; prestige paint adds $700 (Agate Black, Magnetic and Moondust Silver) while SVO pain options (all 58 of them) adds $1400.
Ford Australia is yet to provide launch timing and local pricing for the battery-electric 2024 Ford E-Transit Custom, which was previously confirmed for a 2024 release.
