2024 Hyundai IONIQ 5 arrives Down Under

Facelift brings healthy range extension, more variants and more tech to lauded electric SUV

The facelifted 2024 Hyundai IONIQ 5 line-up has arrived in Australia, priced from $69,800 plus on-road costs.

Pricing for all existing IONIQ 5 variants besides the high-performance N flagship have increased by $2300 as a result of the mid-life update, which is headlined primarily by a pair of enlarged battery packs and the optional availability of a sporty N-Line pack for the Dynamic and Epiq trims.

The facelifted electric SUV made its debut in March this year, confirming mildly revised exterior designs and the bigger battery packs, but it was unclear exactly how far the new 63kWh and 84kWh units would propel the retro-inspired EV.

Now we have the answer: 440km (+56km) for the 63kWh pack, up to 570km (+63km) for the single-motor 84kWh variants and up to 500km (+46km) for the dual-motor versions.

As before, the smaller ‘Standard Range’ battery is offered at the bottom of the range in the entry-level 125kW/350Nm RWD variant, leaving the remaining nine variants with the ‘Extended Range’ 84kWh pack.

Neither battery has yielded any power or torque increases, with Extended Range RWDs still outputting 168kW/350Nm compared to the dual-motor AWDs’ 239kW/605Nm.

Nor does the optional new N-Line pack, which is available on all Dynamiq and Epiq variants for an extra $2500, instead bringing sportier bumpers, more aggressive 20-inch wheels, Alcantara and leather upholstery, alloy pedals, red stitching and interior trim and a sports steering wheel.

All variants score the latest 12.3-inch CCNC infotainment system (bringing wireless smartphone mirroring), Bluelink connected services, over-the-air (OTA) updates, express windows, updated safety systems and driver aids (forward collision-avoidance assist, highway driving assist 2, navigation-based smart cruise control), remote smart parking assist 2 and four USB-C ports.

Tactile changes made within the interior meantime include a redesigned centre console and revised designs for the steering wheel, instrument cluster bezel, infotainment screen and seat patterns.

The base IONIQ 5’s two-tone cloth interior has been swapped out for a single-tone black wool and eco-processed leather combination, with an eco-processed leather interior in black now standard for the non-N-Line Dynamiq and Epiq variants – ‘Dove Grey/Dark Teal’ and ‘Dove Grey/Dark Pebble Grey’ are available as no-cost options.

An improved ride-handling balance is delivered by a “comprehensive revision to the suspension tune” and extra body-stiffening measures that are claimed to improve steering response and feel, reduced vibration and lower NVH levels.

As before, the IONIQ 5 is covered by a five-year/unlimited-km warranty and an eight-year/160,000km warranty on the primary battery pack.
