2024 Lexus GX: Australian pricing and specs

Swish Toyota Prado sibling positioned between the LandCruiser 300 Series and its Lexus LX sibling

UPDATED 16/05/2024 9:30am: Lexus Australia has confirmed the new Lexus GX will officially go on sale next Tuesday (May 21), when full specs for all three variants will also be announced. First deliveries of the all-new Toyota Prado-based luxury SUV will follow soon after, and watch this space for our first Australian review on June 12. The first GX to be sold in Australia will bring the number of Lexus models currently sold here to 10.

ORIGINAL ARTICLE PUBLISHED 05/03/2024: The 2024 Lexus GX has been priced from $116,000 plus on-road costs ahead of its mid-year arrival in Australia, where three versions of the all-new large luxury off-road SUV will be available – all powered by the same twin-turbo 3.4-litre petrol V6.

So far there’s no sign of the 2.4-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol hybrid system that powers its sister model in the US, where the all-new 2024 Toyota Prado will be known as the LandCruiser 250 Series, but the new Prado also arrives here mid-year and could become available with that hybrid powertrain by the end of 2024.

For now, the Lexus GX’s $116K starting price is slightly higher than expected but all three variants remain priced under $130K, positioning the big new seven-seat off-roader right in the middle of the Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series range ($98,076-$145,876) but well below the flagship Lexus LX line-up ($157,061-$219,061).

That opening figure applies to the GX 550 Luxury seven-seater, while the mid-range GX 550 Overtrail five-seat off-road hero is priced just $6250 higher at $122,250 plus ORCs. The flagship seven-seat GX 550 Sports Luxury tops the range less than $6000 higher at $128,200 plus ORCs.

Likely to be a sell-out success even before it arrives because just 1250 units will be available in the first 12 months, the new GX will be the seventh SUV offered by Lexus Australia following next month’s new pint-size LBX, and the ninth new or additional Lexus model to arrive Down Under in 2.5 years – including new five-seat-only RX large SUV.

Lexus Australia CEO John Pappas said at the GX’s global media launch in January that the Japanese premium brand had received more than 1000 expressions of interest in the upmarket Prado sibling – a pre-sales record for the brand in our market.

“We are delighted with the response to GX so far,” he said.

“It has genuine appeal in the way it delivers trademark Lexus luxury and craftsmanship with rugged off-road performance suited to tough Australian conditions.”

Based on the same TNGA-F ladder-frame platform as the Lexus LX and both the Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series and upcoming Prado 250 Series, the third-generation Lexus GX is the first to be sold in Australia.

Specification highlights for the base Luxury include 20-inch alloy wheels, integrated trailer wiring harness and tow hitch receiver, powered tailgate with flip-up rear glass window, auto-levelling LED headlights, rear privacy glass, rear spoiler and flush roof rails, third-row seating, leather-accented upholstery, tri-zone climate control and both heated/ventilated and eight-way power-adjustable front seats.

Infotainment duties are handled by a 14-inch touch-screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus a 10-speaker sound system.

Other headline gear includes a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, colour head-up display, wireless phone charger, 220-volt rear power outlet and five USB-C ports.

The Overtrail largely mirrors this list but ushers in a heap of offroad-oriented gear 18-inch wheels, all-terrain tyres, a locking rear differential, electronic Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (eKDSS) front swaybar disconnect, Multi-Terrain Select (MTS) off-road traction control, Multi-Terrain Monitor, multi-stage Crawl Control, Downhill Assist Control and a larger alternator to run ancillaries.

It also dons a much more rugged look with unique bumpers, exterior trim and colour schemes, but ditches the third row of seats.

At the top of the GX tree, the Sports Luxury restores the seven-seat arrangement and adds 22-inch alloys, adaptive high-beam headlights, auto-extending side steps, a fixed panoramic roof, semi-aniline leather-accented trim, unique dashboard finish, digital rear-view mirror, multi-colour ambient interior illumination, massaging front seats, refrigerated centre storage unit, 21-speaker Mark Levinson sound, a heated steering wheel and Adaptive Variable Suspension damping.

How much does the 2024 Lexus GX cost?
550 Luxury – $116,000
550 Overtrail – $122,250
