Lotus is making a play for Aston Martin’s self-proclaimed title as the maker of the world’s first ‘hyper-GT’, having just revealed the all-new 2024 Lotus Emeya four-door electric ‘coupe’.
Aimed directly at high-end Porsche Taycan EVs, the flagship 2024 Lotus Emeya will dispatch the 0-100km/h sprint in a claimed 2.8 seconds – matching the Porsche Taycan Turbo S – and top out at 256km/h courtesy of a 675kW/985Nm dual-motor powertrain and two-speed transmission.
The ballistic powertrain is supported by a 102kWh lithium-ion battery, but no other variants have been detailed at this time, even though there are more in pipeline as indicated by the reference of a single-speed transmission in the press material.
Conspicuously absent from the model details, however, is an effective cruising range for the groundbreaking model, but Lotus does say the sizeable battery pack can be recharged at up to 350kW when using an ultra-fast DC charger – something that takes it from 10-80 per cent in 18 minutes.
Perhaps the easiest way to describe the Emeya’s exterior design is by likening it to a love child between Lamborghini and Fisker – plenty of bold lines and sharp angles mixed with a wedge-shaped silhouette, slimline exterior lighting and a lurid yellow and black colour scheme.
Dig a little deeper and you’ll notice an active front grille and air-dam combination, while the rear-end features an active spoiler capable of generation more than 215kg of downforce, helped by an equally active diffuser.
The chiselled exterior design is continued within the cabin by deeply sculpted bucket seats, chunky door trims, a multi-layered dashboard and thick steering wheel, behind which resides a minimalist digital instrument cluster.
It’s tiny because the Emeya will feature a huge 55-inch projected augmented reality head-up display on the windscreen that ‘projects’ all the usual digital cockpit information out onto the road in front of the vehicle.
During spirited driving the system can be switched off and supplemented by the slim display on the dash, which will show only the essentials.
The whole package rides on adaptive air suspension as standard, while the flagship will come with a ‘race-grade’ braking system, so the flying four-door should be able to stop almost as fast as it can accelerate.
Various bits of the body and cabin have been craft from sustainably sourced and recycled materials, including repurposed fibres from the fashion industry, PVD aluminium, Alcantara, Nappa leather and Ultrafabrics PU.
“This is a Lotus like you have never seen before,” said Lotus Group design vice-president Ben Payne.
“We’ve built on everything Lotus has achieved so far to create a luxury performance car for the drivers, designed to inspire confidence, exhilarate with raw emotion and pure joy – connecting them to the road.”
More details of the Emeya line-up will be announced next quarter, while details on market availability and pricing will be revealed at a future date.
