2024 Mercedes-AMG C 43 4MATIC Edition R arrives

More go-fast bits for less money is the name of the game for new limited-edition AMG C-Class sedan

A new Mercedes-AMG C-Class variant has arrived in Australia and it marks an exclusive new entry point to the mid-size AMG sedan range.

The 2024 Mercedes-AMG C 43 4MATIC Edition R is available now and priced from $112,600 plus on-road costs, making it $26,300 cheaper than the standard C 43 4MATIC sports sedan ($138,900 plus ORCs) on which it’s based, despite a number of ‘performance-oriented’ upgrades.

However, compromises have been made to include them at the lower price point, and a number of the standard C 43’s safety and tech features have been removed from the Edition R.

These include Digital Light headlights with Adaptive High Beam Assist Plus (replaced by LED headlights with adaptive high-beam), Driving Assistance Package Plus (stop/go functionality for the adaptive cruise control), Urban Guard vehicle protection, augmented reality navigation and heat/noise insulating acoustic glazing (privacy glass remains).

Headlining the Edition R upgrades, however, is the AMG Dynamic Plus package, which includes AMG dynamic engine mounts, a selectable ‘Race’ driving program, a Nappa leather and microfibre-clad AMG Performance steering wheel and red brake callipers behind 20-inch bi-colour alloy wheels.

While there isn’t any extra power or torque from the mild-hybrid 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine (300kW/500Nm), which remains matched to a nine-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive, the Race drive mode sharpens throttle response to better access maximum performance.

The C 43’s racetrack experience has also been enhanced via the Editon R’s inclusion of AMG Track Pace, which records more than 80 vehicle-specific data points like speed, acceleration, steering angle and braking while displaying lap and sector times and also providing driver training and analysis tools.

This sharper intent is reflected on the outside by the addition of Night Package II (including a dark-chromed grille and badging) and on the inside by AMG Performance Seat Package Advanced, comprising sportier AMG bucket seats with a unique combination of Microcut microfibre upholstery and Artico fake-suede bolsters.

Red seatbelts add more drama to the mix, as does unique ‘metal structure’ dash and centre console trim.

Import equipment carries over, including the 11.9-inch MBUX infotainment system, Burmester 3D surround sound system, power-adjustable and heated front seats, smartphone mirroring and wireless charging, head-up display and a panoramic sliding sunroof.

Suspension duties are still handled by the adaptive AMG Ride Control set-up, while the rear-axle steering system improves low-speed manoeuvrability and high-speed stability.

“The Mercedes-AMG C 43 4MATIC Edition R is sure to set hearts racing by offering a combination of performance-oriented upgrades over the C 43 4Matic sedan plus distinctive interior and exterior features, but also bringing a stunning price advantage thanks to a carefully edited standard specification,” said Mercedes-Benz Australia.
