Mercedes-AMG’s new-generation GT portfolio has expanded with the unveiling of the entry-level, four-cylinder-powered 2024 Mercedes-AMG GT 43 Coupe.
Still to be confirmed for Australia, AMG’s new GT 43 is exclusively rear-drive and, using the same engine found on the A 45 S hyper-hatch, produces 310kW and 500Nm from its 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine – or up to 320kW for shorts bursts via a 48V integrated starter-generator.
Acceleration from 0-100km/h takes a claimed 4.6 seconds with the help of launch control, while top speed is listed at 280km/h.
Gear-shifting duties are handled by a nine-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, instead of the usual nine-speed torque-converter – a move AMG says saves weight and improves powertrain response.
The GT 43 rides on passive springs and dampers as standard – leaving the 55 and 63’s adaptive dampers on the shelf as an optional extra – and is hauled up by an AMG high-performance composite brake system headlined by six-piston front callipers.
AMG’s active rear-axle steering system is another optional extra, alongside the AMG Dynamic Plus Package that adds dynamic engine mounts, a locking rear differential, ‘Race’ drive mode, active underbody aero elements, yellow brake callipers and a fixed rear wing.
Marking the four-cylinder apart from its V8 brethren are narrower tracks and fenders front and rear, 19-inch alloy wheels, more subdued aprons and round exhaust outlets.
The interior is largely the same as the GT 55 and GT 63, with headline features including a digital cockpit, 11.9-inch MBUX interface, Nappa leather upholstery, sports seats, high-gloss black trim and an AMG Performance steering wheel.
“The rear-wheel drive concept makes the GT 43 a very agile vehicle that will put a smile on your face on winding roads,” said global AMG boss Michael Schiebe.
The prospect of a four-cylinder AMG GT has been on the cards since January last year, when a studio shot of what we now know as the 43 was leaked online – about eight months ahead of the wider portfolio’s global debut.
The flagship Mercedes-AMG GT 63 4MATIC+ Coupe is expected to arrive Down Under mid-year.
