The 2024 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van range is enroute to Australia armed with a new array of standard safety features, a next-gen MBUX multimedia system and a new eSprinter battery-electric flagship.
With order books now open ahead of first deliveries from August, the new Sprinter’s enhanced safety credentials include more airbags, active lane keeping assist, traffic sign assist, rain-sensing wipers, tyre pressure monitoring and a parking package.
Also new is ‘moving off information assist’, which uses a front camera and six ultrasonic sensors to monitor the immediate surrounds of the vehicle, while Sideguard Assist is essentially an extension of the existing blind spot monitoring system.
All these new driver aids along with the new 10.15-inch MBUX media system (bringing wireless smartphone projection, voice control and digital radio) and 93-litre fuel tank (up from 71L) have added up to $6067 to the Sprinter’s asking price, with the base 311 Sprinter MWB now starting from $71,740 plus on-road costs (+$4978).
The biggest margins can be found in the cab-chassis ranks, but the local Sprinter now also has a new flagship in the form of the battery-electric eSprinter.
Two versions of eSprinter are being offered Down Under: the $104,313 eSprinter MWB 81kWh and the $121,041 eSprinter LWB 113kWh.
The former checks in almost $10,000 upstream of the most expensive diesel panel van and the latter more than $26,000.
Both eSprinter variants are rear-wheel drive, propelled by a 150kW/400Nm electric motor that in turn draws current from either an 81 or 113kWh battery pack depending on the wheelbase.
Mercedes-Benz says the LWB 113kWh version will cover up to 440km on the WLTP cycle and can be charged at up to 115kW when using DC power – something that will yield a 10-80 per cent charge time of 42 minutes. Charging capabilities of the 81kWh battery are TBC.
Drivers can flick between three drive modes – comfort, economic and maximum range – as they see fit, with four manual regenerative braking levels on offer too.
The eSprinter is the seventh zero-emissions commercial van to hit our market behind the Ford eTransit, LDV eDeliver 7 and eDeliver 9, Mercedes-Benz eVito, Peugeot E-Partner and Renault Kangoo E-Tech.
Returning to the combustion-powered Sprinter line-up, no changes have been made to the familiar 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine, which continues to output between 84kW/300Nm and 140kW/450Nm depending on the variant, driving the rear wheels via a nine-speed automatic transmission.
