Full performance stats on the all-electric 2024 MG Cyberster have been released ahead of its launch in Australia next year – and while the Chinese sports car isn’t as quick as previously claimed, it still packs a hefty punch.
Fully revealed last April at the Shanghai motor show, we’ve had to wait until the new MG Cyberster’s local launch at the Chengdu motor show before full details of its advanced powertrain have surfaced.
The company has now revealed that the flagship version of the reborn MG roadster will come with a dual-motor powertrain that will pump out 400kW and 725Nm of torque.
That’s enough, MG claims, for a rapid 0-100km/h dash of just 3.2 seconds.
The claim is a little slower than the 2.6sec time touted by a senior engineer last month, which would have made the MG Cyberster the quickest EV in Australia – overtaking the Porsche Taycan Turbo S (2.8sec).
Powered by a 77kWh lithium-ion battery, the SAIC-owned MG has also revealed the Cyberster will have a decent range of 579km, although that figure is recorded on China’s CLTC test cycle, rather than the stricter WLTLP regime, which will produce a lower number.
We already know that the MG Cyberster measures in at 4535mm long, 1913mm wide and 1329mm tall, and rests on a 2690mm wheelbase, making it much bigger than a Mazda MX-5, for example.
It’s also heavier too, on account of that big battery, with a kerb weight of 1985kg.
Once launched, a less powerful 224kW single-motor Cyberster will be introduced that will be paired with a smaller 64kWh battery that provides for a CLTC-verified range of 520km.
Both cars will come with Brembo brakes with four-piston callipers, while a highly rigid roll bar has been included to boost safety.
A key member of the Cyberster’s development has been ex-Ferrari F1 engineer Marco Fainello, so advanced chassis tech is anticipated.
Pricing, local specs and launch timing for Australia are still to be announced, although the Cyberster is due to arrive during 2024.
In the UK, the Cyberster will be priced from £55,000 ($A108,000), which could prove indicative for our market.
