MG Motor Australia has announced first local details of the upcoming MG Cyberster ahead of its Aussie release in the fourth quarter of 2024, with pre-orders now being taken for the flagship 77kWh dual-motor all-wheel drive version of the battery-electric sports car.
Australian pricing for the inbound Porsche Boxster rival hasn’t been officially announced yet, however, the Chinese brand today said the Cyberster’s starting price will be somewhere “between $100,000 and $150,000” plus on-road costs, comfortably making it the most expensive MG model to date.
The 2024 MG Cyberster’s high asking price is more than justified, however, primarily by its 400kW/725Nm dual-motor powertrain that is capable of launching it from 0-100km/h in an Audi e-tron GT-busting 3.2 seconds.
Final Australian specification (and pricing) details will be announced closer to the model’s local introduction, but MG Motor Australia has thus far confirmed five exterior paint colours (Beige, Grey, Silver, Red and Yellow) for our market, paired with either a black or red roof and two interior colourways – black and red, white and grey.
The Cyberster measures 4535mm long, 1913mm wide, 1329mm tall and rides on a 2690mm wheelbase, making it much bigger than a Mazda MX-5 along with being even more conspicuous thanks to its unique scissor doors.
It tips the scales at 1985kg and offers a range of up to 579km against the CLTC test cycle, which is more lenient than the stricter WLTLP regime.
Undisguised evaluation vehicles have been spotted around Sydney in recent months and MG’s local top brass is eagerly looking forward to the model’s arrival.
“We’re really excited to be opening dealer orders and our official register your interest for our all-electric roadster, the Cyberster, featuring signature scissor doors as envisioned by Carl Gotham and his MG London design team,” said MG Motor Australia sales manager Brad Chruszcz.
“The Cyberster will be offered with a fully-electric fabric hood available in either a deep red or black, which can be opened or closed in as little as 15 seconds.
“At this stage, the all-wheel drive Cyberster promises to be a compelling yet refined drive as we’re only looking to bring the 77kWh AWD variant to Aussie shores.
“We will be bringing limited numbers of these cars into the country so it’ll definitely be a case of supply versus demand, given the interest we’ve already had from the public and our 90-plus dealers.”
A lesser single-motor version is tipped to come to market further down the line, offering 224kW of power and a smaller 64kWh battery pack that should see the asking price dip well below the $100,000 mark in return for a shorter range and less performance.
Brembo brakes and the aforementioned scissor doors headline the Cyberster’s global spec sheet, along with the folding fabric roof that makes it the only dedicated battery-electric sports car coming to market in the near future beyond the Maserati GranCabrio Folgore – an ETA for which remains TBC.
