The upcoming 2024 MG Cyberster roadster is a brand-building hero car, not a volume-selling cash-cow.
That’s the word from MG Australia’s new chief commercial officer, Giles Belcher, who told carsales the exotic sports car is an expensive necessity for any self-respecting car-maker seeking to cement its position in the Aussie new-car marketplace.
MG Motor Australia is currently one of the top 10 brands by sales volume in Australia and is working through a complete renewal of its product portfolio that started recently with the redesigned MG3 small car and will include next-generation versions of its top-selling ZS small SUV and HS mid-size SUV.
And soon the Cyberster will join the range in Australia, towering above all other models yet bathing them in its justifiably arrogant glow.
When carsales suggested the sleek sports car would need to slide in under $130,000, Belcher said “you’d be right” – but wouldn’t be drawn on more accurate pricing ahead of its local launch in the final quarter of 2024.
Company executives have previously suggested that it could be priced as high as $150,000.
Belcher was on hand to kick off a national roadshow for the Cyberster, designed to drum up interest in the brand’s game-changing, scissor-doored EV.
The Cyberster will be offered in just one model grade, the top-spec dual-motor/all-wheel drive version that generates an AMG-bashing 375kW and 725Nm of torque.
MG says it can accelerate from 0-100km/h in just 3.2 seconds, using launch control, making it one of the quickest cars – EV or otherwise – in Australia.
A 74kWh NMC lithium-ion battery enables a claimed 444km range on the WLTP cycle.
Standard features will include 20-inch alloy wheels, Brembo brakes, a wrap-around virtual cockpit with three screens, a power-operated roof mechanism and, of course, those show-stopping power-operated scissor doors.
Available in Australia in five colours (Dynamic Red, Inca Yellow, New English White, Camden Grey, Cosmic Silver) and two interior choices (white-on-black or red-on-black), customers can also request the black fabric roof be swapped out for a red fabric roof.
Those who prefer fixed-roof coupes to convertibles will observe that MG recently unveiled its Cyber GTS Concept at the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK, which could preview a cheaper, faster version of the Cyberster.
Belcher told carsales it’s “possible” the coupe could make the transition from concept car to reality and agreed there were “similarities” with the Cyberster convertible, but cautioned “there’s nothing confirmed yet”.
