The second-generation 2024 MG ZS compact SUV has arrived on Australian soil priced from $33,990 drive-away, marking a huge $11,000 – or 48 per cent – increase over the previous model.
Budget-buyers need not despair though, the new entry price is for the first-ever ZS Hybrid as opposed to the new-generation petrol version which will come to market next quarter, followed by a ZS EV successor in Q2.
Until then, the local MG ZS portfolio will comprise the Hybrid+ Excite and Hybrid+ Essence ($36,990), both of which feature a potent 158kW hybrid powertrain comprising a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, singular electric motor and a 1.83kWh NCM battery pack.
The system is said to consume 4.7 litres of 95 RON per 100km on the combined cycle and uses a three-speed hybrid automatic transmission to drive the front wheels, yielding an 8.7-second 0-100km/h time under maximum thrust.
Standard equipment highlights on the Excite trim includes 17-inch alloy wheels, LED exterior lighting, cloth upholstery, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, 12.3-inch infotainment system, smartphone mirroring, DAB digital radio, a 360-degree camera, sat-nav, a six-speaker sound system, keyless entry and start, automatic headlights and adaptive cruise control.
The Essence builds on this with a leather steering wheel, PVC upholstery, a panoramic sunroof, a power-adjustable driver’s seat with lumbar support, 18-inch alloys, heated front seats, seatback map pockets, a sunglasses cavity and vanity mirrors.
Neither variant comes with a spare wheel.
Active safety measures meantime are identical between grades and provided by the MG Pilot suite: autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, lane change assist, intelligent cruise assist, rear cross traffic alert, forward collision warning, blind spot detection and intelligent speed limit assist.
The new ZS follows in the tyre tracks of the bigger HS in being significantly larger than its predecessor – 4430mm (+116mm) x 1818mm (+9mm) x 1635mm (-9mm) x 2610mm (+25mm) – and adopting the same new design language as seen on the second-gen MG3 hatch.
Six colours are available to choose from: Dover White, Luna Grey Metallic, Sloane Silver Metallic, Emerald Green Metallic, Brighton Blue Metallic, Diamond Red Metallic and Black Pearl Metallic, while the factory warranty coverage is 10 years/250,000km.
