2024 NIO ET7 to offer 1000km-plus long-range battery

Chinese brand’s Tesla Model S rival to be available with Ultra Long Range 150kWh battery

Chinese car-maker NIO has announced that its flagship 2024 NIO ET7 electric sedan will be available with the option of a new 150kWh Ultra Long Range battery, which will be capable of covering more than 1000km on a single charge.

To prove its mile-munching capabilities, NIO founder and CEO William Li drove the NIO ET7 with the big battery from Shanghai to Xiamen – a 1044km trip – without needing to recharge.

Not only was there three per cent charge remaining at the end of the drive, the journey was taken in range-sapping “cold temperatures”, according to NIO.

Like other NIO models, the ET7 with the Ultra Long Range battery is compatible with the car-maker’s battery-swap technology, which allows it to be replaced in around three minutes.

NIO has 2322 Power Swap Stations worldwide: 2289 in China and 33 in Europe.

Claimed to be the highest-capacity and most energy-dense mass-produced battery pack currently manufactured in China, the new NIO battery is billed as the world’s first pouch-format cell-to-pack battery that integrates the pack directly onto the vehicle body and floor.

This arrangement is said to slash the number of parts and reduce complexity and weight.

“The completion of this range test marks the range of smart EVs going beyond 1000km, which will further promote the transformation of the automotive industry from the consumption of gasoline to electricity,” said Li.

NIO is already available in some European markets, with models priced from €50,000 ($A81,000).

It has yet to enter right-hand drive markets, but Li recently confirmed that right-hand drive prototypes are running around, hinting heavily that a launch in the UK, Australia and other right-hook markets are in the pipeline.
