2024 Polestar 4 priced ahead of August release

New Tesla Model Y-fighting mid-size electric SUV will be pricier than all major rivals but offers significantly more range

Australian pricing and specification details for the upcoming 2024 Polestar 4 have been released ahead of its arrival Down Under in the third quarter of next year – around August, two months after the bigger and pricier new Polestar 3 – and the promising new Tesla Model Y rival will be priced from $81,500 plus on-road costs.

That opening figure applies only to the entry-level Long Range Single Motor variant of the Polestar 4, which is expected to be the Chinese-Swedish car-maker’s top-seller, and swells to $93,050 for the Long Range Dual Motor flagship.

The two-pronged Polestar 4 line-up will have to contend with a three-variant Tesla Model Y portfolio as well as a four-member Kia EV6 family and an eight-chapter Hyundai IONIQ 5 clan.

Crucially, while the Polestar’s entry price is significantly higher than all of its arch-rivals, the swanky Swede counters this deficit with a significantly larger (102kWh) battery pack and therefore a much longer driving range (600km WLTP).

As per the updated Polestar 2 sedan, the single-motor Polestar 4 variant packs a 200kW/343Nm motor on the rear axle, while the dual-motor version adds a second unit on the front axle, yielding more power, performance and grip but subtracting from the total driving range (560km) on account of the extra mechanical drag and energy requirements.

According to data seen by carsales, the Australian Long Range Single Motor will hit 100km/h in 7.1 seconds and push on to a top speed of 200km/h, while the Long Range Dual Motor hits the tonne in a claimed 3.8sec thanks to its hefty 400kW/686Nm outputs but its top speed is the same.

Standard equipment across the range includes an eight-speaker sound system, dual-zone climate control, adaptive cruise control, auto-dimming rearview mirror, glass roof, launch control, 20-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry and start, adaptive dampers and a pollen filter.

Headline safety kit meantime comprises autonomous emergency braking (AEB) front and rear, forward and reverse collision warning, rear cross traffic alert, emergency steering assist, secondary collision mitigation, automatic SOS call, lane keep assist, driver attention detection, blind-spot monitoring and rear seat reminder.

Available colours will include Magnesium, Gold, Electron, Storm, Space, Snow and Gold – all of which are metallic. Magnesium is a no-cost option, but Space, Storm and Electron carry a $1750 premium, while Snow and Gold are available for $2300.

The Pilot pack is standard on the Polestar 4, but a Plus pack adds $8000, Pro pack $2500 and Performance pack $7200.

Other options include 21-inch Sport wheels ($2500), electrochromic panoramic roof ($2700), rear side window privacy glass ($700) and body-coloured lower cladding ($1400).

Buyers can choose between charcoal or zinc deco interior trim with the standard charcoal ‘bio-attributed’ MicroTech upholstery, both at no cost, however ‘mist-tailored knit with zinc deco’ adds $1400. You can also opt for the $7000 ‘animal-welfare’ Nappa leather in charcoal or zinc.

Meantime, range and pricing details for the bigger 2025 Polestar 3 have also been announced, with the large electric SUV primed to undergo an expansion from two variants to four as part of the new model year.

All are based around Long range Dual Motor spec with the Pilot pack fitted standard, starting at $132,720 plus ORCs.

Adding the Plus pack to the equation pushes the price up to $144,420, while adding only the Performance Pack (in lieu of the Plus pack) can be ordered for the same $144,420 (both plus ORCs).

Having both the Plus and Performance packs on board brings the price to $156,120 plus ORCs.

Metallic paint options include the no-cost Magnesium and $2000 Jupiter, Thunder, Midnight and Space. The premium Snow colour costs $2300.

Charcoal ‘bio-attributed’ WeaveTech textile trim and vinyl with 3D plastic deco is standard, while MicroTech with repurposed aluminium deco can be ordered for $700 or ‘animal-welfare’ charcoal wool for $1700. Three Nappa leather trim options are available for $7500.

Other options include 1.3-Megapixel HD LED headlights ($3000), 21-inch Plus wheels ($2500), 22-inch Sport rims ($1800), privacy laminated acoustic rear side windows ($700) and a fully automatic electric tow bar ($2900).
