The facelifted 2024 Porsche Taycan has set a new record for a battery-electric production sedan at the Nurburgring, posting a 7min7sec time around the circuit.
That extremely rapid time almost saw the four-door Porsche Taycan sedan – possibly in new Turbo GT trim – pip the 1408kW Rimac Nevera hypercar, which clocked a 7min5sec time around the notoriously challenging 20.6km road course.
The 2024 Taycan’s latest hot lap places it 28sec quicker than the 760kW Tesla Model S Plaid, and 26sec ahead of the Porsche Taycan Turbo S that previously set a benchmark time with its 560kW dual-motor powertrain.
That’s led to suggestions the still-to-be-confirmed Taycan Turbo GT variant will get a new triple- or quad-motor powertrain that will push out at least 750kW.
Looking heavily upgraded from current Taycan Turbo S, the 2024 model that set the lap featured a huge rear wing, revised front bumper, large front splitter and fresh rear air intake.
Up front, the unnamed Taycan flagship bags a pair of revised headlights that are set to be adopted by the entire range.
Also identified on the fastest-ever production EV to lap the Nurburgring was a set of optional lightweight 21-inch wheels and stickier Pirelli P Zero Corsa tyres that will be offered on the new Turbo GT.
Setting the latest record lap was Porsche chief test driver Lars Kern who said he “pushed as hard as he could” for multiple laps.
Commenting on the Taycan’s time, Porsche product boss Kevin Giek said: “Twenty-six seconds is half an eternity in motorsport.
“Lars’ lap time of 7:07.55 minutes on the Nordschleife is sensational, putting the Taycan in the same league as electric hypercars.
“And the impressive thing about it is that over several laps, Lars clocked almost exactly the same time.”
Porsche has yet to announce when the 2024 Porsche Taycan, including the new Turbo GT, will make its debut, but some reports suggest it will land in the third quarter, suggesting an arrival time in Australia towards the end of this year or early 2025.
