2024 Renault Rafale E-Tech 4x4 300hp unleashed

But don’t expect the French brand’s most powerful PHEV ever to appear in local showrooms soon

Renault is doubling down with its electrification efforts, as evidenced by its first high-performance plug-in hybrid model – the 2024 Renault Rafale E-Tech 4x4 300hp.

Producing a combined 224kW, the higher-output powertrain of Renault’s new flagship SUV comprises a 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine, three electric motors and a 22kWh lithium-ion battery pack to deliver 0-100km/h acceleration in 6.4 seconds and, according to the French car-maker, 80-120km/h overtaking pace in four seconds.

All-wheel drive is afforded by the location of one of the e-motors on the rear axle, while a ‘multi-mode clutchless dogbox’ takes care of transmission duties.

The system offers an extra 75kW over the standard plugless hybrid Rafale and sees combined fuel consumption slashed from 4.7L to just 0.7L/100km thanks to its generously sized battery pack.

Renault is claiming an electric range of up to 100km, a maximum zero-emissions speed of 135km/h and a total fuel range of up to 1000km.

The whole package is underpinned by the same athletic chassis set-up as the standard Rafale – multi-link rear suspension, four-wheel steering, etc – but it’s blessed with a much more aggressive Alpine-tuned set-up comprising new dampers, springs, jounce bumpers, anti-roll bars and angry 21-inch wheels.

Those upgraded dampers are adaptive and camera-based – like on a Genesis – and supported by unique calibration for the braking, regenerative braking, stability and trajectory control, and power steering systems, as well as high-end Continental tyres.

All these goodies are included in the Atelier Alpine version of the Rafale, along with ‘Satin Summit Blue’ bodywork, floating rear spoiler and three ‘agility control’ settings that help tailor the enhanced underpinnings and electronics to one’s liking regardless of the drive mode.

Sadly, Renault Australia says it still doesn’t have any plans to release the Rafale here, despite the fact it’s produced in right-hand drive, but insists it continues to assess the local suitability of models available to it.
