The 2024 Smart #1 has been priced from $54,900 plus on-road costs and the bigger Smart #3 from $57,900 plus ORCs ahead of first customer deliveries in September, and three versions of each small electric SUV will be offered from launch.
Both the Smart #1 and #3 model lines will comprise the Pro+, Premium and Brabus grades, and all #1 variants will undercut their equivalent Volvo EX30 sister vehicles by at least a couple of grand.
The sub-$55K opening price of the Smart #1 predictably applies to the entry-level Pro+ grade and will net buyers 19-inch wheels, a halo panoramic roof, semi-autonomous driving, LED headlights, wireless smartphone mirroring and a powered tailgate, among other features.
The sub-$59K Premium version adds a Beats sound system, fast AC charging, Matrix LED headlights and leather upholstery, with both variants sharing the same 200kW/343Nm single-motor powertrain capable of launching them from 0-100km/h in a claimed 6.7 seconds.
Justifying its significantly higher $67,900 plus ORCs price, meantime, the flagship Brabus variant wades into battle with a sexy body kit and a punchy 315kW/543Nm dual-motor system capable of hitting 100km/h in acclaimed 3.9sec.
Its equipment list reads largely the same as the Premium’s, but it swaps out the leather for microfibre suede upholstery and throws in red brake callipers and a dedicated ‘Brabus’ drive mode.
All these equipment highlights correlate to the equivalent Smart #3 variants to the letter, with the only difference being the price and performance.
The Pro+ and Premium will each hit the tonne in a claimed 5.8sec and start from $57,900 and $61,900 plus ORCs respectively, whereas the Brabus version costs $70,900 plus ORCs and stops the clock in a claimed 3.7sec.
All Aussie Smarts will come with a 66kWh lithium-ion battery pack, offering effective ranges varying between 420 and 455km depending on the model and variant.
“The return of the Smart brand with such exciting new premium EV vehicles, highlighting German design and industry leading EV technology, is a very exciting time for our group,” said John Good, the managing director of Australia’s new Smart importer LSH Auto.
“We are certain that the extensive and highly appealing Smart range will build a unique position in the Australian market for those wishing to add electric mobility to their lifestyle.
“We look forward to showcasing the smart family to Australians in the very near future.”
Smart vehicles will initially be sold and serviced out of LSH Auto’s existing Mercedes-Benz CBD dealerships in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, before expanding into Western Australia, South Australia and Tasmania sometime next year.
