2024 Subaru WRX Club Spec confirmed for Oz

Special-edition Rex sedan to bring sharper dynamics and STI looks but no extra poke

Subaru Australia has finally put a name to the special-edition Rex we’ve known about for almost a year now: the 2024 Subaru WRX Club Spec.

Originally touted as the WRX 30 Years edition, the upcoming limited-edition was first referenced in May 2023 and eventually leaked via homologation documents as the ‘WRX SE’, revealing an STI-spec rear wing, unique 19-inch alloys wrapped in sticky Bridgestone Potenza S007 rubber and red Brembo brake callipers.

The data also revealed the special-edition wouldn’t bring any extra firepower (202kW/350Nm) or chassis upgrades – just an angrier aesthetic and marginally lower kerb weight (-2kg) thought to be liberated by the new brakes and potentially a set of lightweight Recaro bucket seats, as seen on the US-spec WRX TR.

Subaru Australia hasn’t released any extra intel on the model’s specification as part of today’s confirmation, but it has confirmed an initial allocation of just 150 units – all manual sedans – and a local release date in April.

The brand has also released a single image of the low-volume variant in the WRX’s signature ‘WR Blue Pearl’ paint scheme, which will no doubt reopen the just-healed wounds of purists and fans cruelly denied a new-generation full-fat WRX STI.

A Subaru Australia spokesperson said more details of the WRX Club Spec, including pricing, would be released closer to its market release.

For those in need of a refresher on the current WRX hierarchy, the current sedan range comprises the base WRX, RS and tS trims, the former two of which are available with a six-speed manual or continuously variable transmission (CVT).

The tS is CVT-only but all versions feature the same symmetrical all-wheel-drive system and 2.4-litre flat four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine outputting 202kW/350Nm across the board – some 25Nm less than the US-spec versions.

Wagon versions, meantime, are all CVT and specifically comprise the WRX, GT and tS grades.

Based on the homologation data, the WRX Club Spec should slot in between the RS and tS sedans in terms of standard equipment, while pricing remains more of a mystery at this stage.
