Toyota Australia’s top-selling model is now electrified – or at least some versions of it will soon be – with the Japanese brand today confirming the first 2024 Toyota HiLux variants with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology will enter showrooms next month, priced from $54,130 plus on-road costs.
The HiLux’s new mild-hybrid (MHEV) system is now known as ‘V-Active Technology’ and will be standard in automatic SR5 and Rogue 4x4 double-cabs and an optional extra for automatic SR 4x4 double-cabs.
That means the new fuel-saving system, which is now commonplace in many European vehicles but in this case doesn’t change official performance outputs, is only available in premium dual-cab 4x4 auto versions of the HiLux – not manual variants, not popular WorkMate entry grades, not SR or SR5 4x2s, not single- or extra-cab SRs and not the flagship HiLux GR Sport.
The V-Active tech adds between $590 and $1605 to the asking prices of the applicable variants and will be offered in tandem with Toyota’s Multi-Terrain Select off-road system (MTS), which comprises six off-road drive modes to help improve traction.
“When in high range, MTS can be configured in Dirt, Sand, Mud, Deep Snow and Auto modes, while switching to low range offers Sand, Mud, Auto and Rock modes to provide the ideal mix of traction control in any situation,” Toyota said.
No fuel consumption figures have been released, but Toyota claims the 48V system yields a fuel saving of “up to approximately 10 per cent” over the HiLux's standard non-electrified 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine, primarily through the fitment of an idle-stop system but also via an idle speed reduction from 720 to just 600rpm and the temporary contribution of a bit of extra torque under acceleration to reduce engine load.
Toyota has also taken the chance to enhance the HiLux’s value factor, with 48V-equipped variants also scoring some extra equipment on a trim-specific basis, helping offset the various price increases (see the full breakdown below).
In the case of the SR, the mild-hybrid system and MTS are joined by dual-zone automatic climate control, auto up-down windows, keyless entry and keyless start.
The SR5 (from $60,580) and Rogue (from $71,530) meantime nab a wireless phone charger and two rear USB-C charging ports.
All 48V-equipped HiLux variants also score a visual front-end upgrade including a fresh front bumper with honeycomb mesh grille. In addition, SR5 grades gain dark-finish LED headlights, gloss-black exterior mirrors and door-handles, a darkened rear bumper and powder-coated black sports bar.
All pick-up variants also get a tailgate damper with lift assist, comprising a gas strut and steel cable to replace the existing steel bracket, while automatic SR double-cab pick-ups add front/rear parking sensors.
“The introduction of V-Active Technology for HiLux is yet another step as we continue to refine and improve the efficiency and performance of our range and we wanted to ensure it remained a great value proposition for our customers,” said Toyota Australia sales, marketing and franchise operations vice-president Sean Hanley.
“With minimal price increases, we believe we have achieved that especially when you factor in the additional equipment and refreshed styling that will ensure HiLux will continue to appeal to a broad set of customers.”
Regarding the price table below, the increase shown for the SR variants is the price premium over the equivalent diesel, given the 48V system is optional on this trim. The 2024 SR5 and Rogue, meantime, score the tech as standard so the shown price is the new retail price.
