2024 Toyota Prado: Australian pricing and specs

All-new Prado is a whole lot pricier than its trusty predecessor, but will offer a heap more gear

Pricing and specifications for the all-new 2024 Toyota Prado have been announced ahead of its long-awaited arrival in the third quarter of this year and the bad news is a starting figure of $72,500 makes it almost $10,000 more expensive than its 15-year-old predecessor.

Indeed in entry-level GX form the new 250 Series Prado costs just $1240 less than the penultimate Ford Everest Sport V6 ($73,740 plus ORCs), while the flagship Kakadu will cost more than six figures on the road at $99,990 plus ORCs – almost $2000 more than the cheapest LandCruiser 300 Series with turbo-diesel V6 power ($98,076 plus ORCs).

Between the two bookends are the volume-selling GXL ($79,990 plus ORCs), VX ($87,400 plus ORCs) and Altitude ($92,700 plus ORCs), all of which are between $10,000 and $12,000 more expensive than their respective predecessors.

Toyota attributes the sizeable price hikes to the new Prado’s more advanced TNGA-F ladder-frame platform, 48V ‘V-Active’ mild-hybrid tech, eight-speed automatic transmission and “comprehensive advances” in technology and equipment.

All new Prados will boast a segment-appropriate 3500kg maximum braked towing capacity (up from 3000kg) and power from a ‘re-engineered’ 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine outputting an unchanged 150kW/500Nm, despite being electrified.

No fuel consumption figures have yet been announced, but based on its lower 110-litre fuel capacity (down from 150 litres) and the outgoing 150 Series’ 7.9L/100km combined figure, plus an improvement of 10 per cent for V-Active as claimed by Toyota, the new Prado’s fuel range should reduce to about 1550km.

Once again, the new Prado will come with a full-time 4x4 system and a two-speed transfer case with low range, while the aforementioned eight-speed auto handles gear-shifting duties as standard.

A locking centre differential is included on all grades, along with electric power steering, a new ‘tow haul’ drive mode, crawl control, front/rear parking sensors, driver monitor camera and emergency driving stop system, safe exit assist, nine airbags, autonomous emergency braking and the rest of Toyota’s Safety Sense driver aids and active safety features.

Standard equipment for the entry-level GX five-seater includes dual-zone climate control, cloth upholstery, LED headlights, grey 18-inch alloys, keyless entry/start, rubber floor mats, 12.3-inch infotainment screen, 7.0-inch driver’s display, panoramic view monitor, 10-speaker sound system, cloud-based navigation, wireless smartphone mirroring, adaptive cruise control and Toyota Connected Services.

The GXL builds on this with a third row of seats for a total of seven, synthetic leather upholstery, eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated and cooled front seats, a leather-accented steering wheel, rear-seat air-conditioning, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, wireless smartphone charging and illuminated door-trims.

The VX goes quite a bit further than that with a series of cosmetic, equipment and mechanical upgrades headlined by adaptive variable suspension (AVS) and next-generation Multi-Terrain Select traction control.

Other VX-specific inclusions comprise a slatted chrome grille, adaptive bi-LED headlights, black 20-inch wheels, body-coloured bumpers and mouldings, premium leather upholstery, power-adjustable passenger seat and steering wheel, refrigerated centre console box, carpet floor mats, 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, 14-speaker JBL sound system and a multi-terrain monitor.

Aimed at those wanting to push the boundaries further off-road, the new Altitude variant is based on the VX but ditches its third row, 20-inch wheels and road-biassed tyres in favour of a more cargo-friendly five-seat layout, 18-inch hoops and all-terrain tyres respectively.

It also adds a moonroof, black exterior trim, locking rear differential, digital rear-view mirror, heated steering wheel, head-up display and a more capable swaybar-disconnect system to free-up suspension articulation, albeit at the cost of the AVS system.

At the top of the tree, the Kakadu also builds on the VX’s spec sheet with a panoramic moon roof, illuminated side steps, heated and ventilated rear outboard seats, a heated steering wheel, head-up display, digital rear-view mirror and a rear limited-slip differential.

The Toyota Prado is backed by a five year capped-price service program, priced at $780 per year, given service intervals of six-months or 10,000km (whichever occurs first) are priced at $390 each time. The Prado's chief rival, Ford Everest, has 12-month, 15,000km service intervals.

Like many car brands, Toyota will sell the LandCruiser Prado through a full-service lease (FSL) via its financial arm, Toyota Finance Australia. This wraps up all costs in one monthly payment, which covers servicing, maintenance, insurance, registration, third-party insurance and replacement tyres.

“The 2024 LandCruiser Prado will build on the model’s reputation as one of Australia’s best-loved vehicles, equally capable and comfortable whether taking owners across the outback or on the school run,” said Toyota Australia sales, marketing and franchise operations vice-president Sean Hanley.

“Blending seven decades of LandCruiser off-road heritage with the modern utility and appointments of a luxury SUV, it is destined to be the most desirable generation yet.

“We look forward to opening our order books for this great new range during the third quarter.”

All new Prados will be covered by Toyota’s five-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty and eight exterior paint colours will be available. The VX and Kakadu model grades can be had in Dusty Bronze metallic, Eclipse Black metallic and Frosted White pearl, while GX and GXL add three solid colour options, Ebony, Midnight Alloy and Glacier White.

Top-spec Prado Altitude models are add Tanami Taupe and Ningaloo Blue solid colours, both matched to a retro light grey roof colour.
