Volkswagen has released a new teaser for its upcoming new T7 Transporter range ahead of its reveal in the second quarter of next year, previewing the new load-lugger’s exterior design and outing its global powertrain and body style options.
Late last month Volkswagen Australia confirmed it will release the new MQB-based T7 Multivan and California camper, the all-new MEB-based battery-electric ID. Buzz people-mover and Buzz Cargo van, and the updated MY24 Crafter large van in the first quarter of 2024, followed by the new T7 Transporter van and Caravelle people-mover in the first quarter of 2025.
It’s been well reported that Volkswagen and Ford are expanding their partnership beyond the Amarok-Ranger collaboration to include electric vehicles and the new 2024 Volkswagen Transporter which will essentially be a Ford Transit Custom underneath different body.
The relationship between the two models is clear to see in terms of overall stature, but the VW will opt for a sleeker overall aesthetic with squarer headlights and a radically different grille/bumper design.
According to the teaser there’ll be at least four different powertrains offered in the new Transporter globally, specifically comprising turbo-diesel (front- and all-wheel drive), plug-in hybrid (‘eHybrid’) and battery-electric options.
All of these powertrains will be lifted directly from Ford, as per the Amarok-Ranger partnership, but VW is expected to reimagine the next Transporter’s interior.
Unsurprisingly, there’ll also be a similar array of body styles to the Transit Custom – van, high-roof van and yet-to-be-revealed crew-cab pick-up – while the Caravelle will once again serve as the shuttle bus version, and you can expect all versions to offer more than one wheelbase option.
Joining the new Multivan, California and ID. Buzz twins on sale here in a little over a year, the new Transporter and Caravelle will complete Volkswagen’s new-generation ‘Bulli Family’, which aims to offer a van, ute or bus for just about every requirement.
That will see the T7 Transporter arrive in local showrooms up to 12 months after its Blue Oval cousin, but a similar delay hasn’t stopped the new Amarok selling like hotcakes and breaking sales records.
