2024 Volvo EX90 production starts, but not for Oz

US production of Volvo’s flagship electric SUV cranks up; Chinese operations still to fire

Production of the 2024 Volvo EX90 has finally started after a near-two-year delay, but only in the US – not China, where Australian examples of the all-new large electric luxury SUV will be made.

Volvo first revealed the EX90 in November 2022, when it was also confirmed for Australian release in late 2024 – a timeline that remained intact after the model’s official production start was pushed back by more than a year in May 2023.

The same couldn’t be said for the related Polestar 3, which had a several months added to its local ETA – now Q3 instead of Q1 this year – as a result of the delayed production start, due to Volvo’s desire to spend more time honing its operating software.

Volvo Car Australia has confirmed to carsales that first examples of the new EX90s will arrive here at the end of this year, before customer deliveries take place from early 2025.

Volvo’s global CEO Jim Rowan said the EX90 was the “start of a new era” for the Swedish-founded, Chinese-owned car-maker, specifically thanks to the vehicle’s “safety, sustainability and human-centric technology”.

Local pricing and specification details for the EX90 haven’t been announced yet, but the big seven-seat battery-electric SUV will pack a huge 111kWh lithium-ion battery to sustain a pair of electric motors outputting 300kW/910Nm. Other powertrain configurations will be released later.

The large-capacity battery provides a range of 600km on the WLTP cycle and can be charged from 10 to 80 per cent in less than half an hour when using a DC fast-charger, says Volvo.

Pricing is expected to start from well north of $100,000, as per the sportier Polestar 3.
