The 2025 Audi A6 Avant has been unwrapped revealing the premium German brand's next-generation alternative to the combustion-powered BMW 5 Series Touring or Mercedes E-Class wagon.
Likely to be one of the last-ever turbo-diesel-powered Audis, originally the new Audi A6 Avant was supposed to carry the 'A7' nameplate before buyer confusion scuttled the VW Group-owned car-maker's new naming strategy.
Created to sit below the new battery-electric A6 e-tron sedan and wagon, that rides on an entirely different platform, the new A6 Avant will come with the option of either a turbo petrol (badged TFSI) or a turbo-diesel that feature a tailgate sporting the familiar 'TDI' nameplate.
Most markets will get the choice of two four-cylinder engines - either a 150kW/340Nm 2.0-litre petrol turbo, or a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel that incorporates Audi's advanced MHEV Plus mild-hybrid tech and produces 150kW and 400Nm of torque and allows EV-only driving at parking speeds and when engine-off cruising on the highway.
The quicker of the two four-pots is the diesel, that can spring from 0-100km/h in 7.0 seconds - 1.3sec faster than the TFSI while averaging 5.0L/100km.
A further 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 petrol will also be offered that gets the same fuel mild-hybrid tech but combines its efficiency with a thumping 270kW peak power that helps the family-friendly wagon launch off the line from 0-100km/h in 4.7 seconds.
An even more powerful version of the same engine will reappear at a later date under the bonnet of the sporty S6 sedan and wagon.
Fresh tech offered with the 5 Series rival includes agility-boosting rear-wheel steering (that is combined with the firm's quattro all-wheel drive) and a comfier option of air suspension.
Looking much sportier than the car it replaces, the A6 Avant sits on Audi's latest PPC (Premium Platform Combustion) architecture which is a further evolution of the Volkswagen Group's MLB evo underpinnings.
Adopting looks inspired by the e-tron GT, the new A6 picks up where the stylish A5 left off and gets a sculptured look with pronounced arches and a rakish rear roofline.
Measuring in at 4990mm long, the new wagon is 60mm longer than before, with the tailgate adopting a prominent lightbar and a pair of OLED rear lamps.
Like the A5 the light signatures can be personalised.
Offering 503 litres of luggage space (more than 100L less than the more practical E-Class wagon), total carrying capacity increases to 1543 litres with the rear seats dropped - a figure that is a substantial 300 litres less than the big Benz.
Within, the cabin is dominated by a triple-screen layout that includes an 11.0-inch digital instrument cluster, a 14.5-inch infotainment screen and an optional 10.9-inch passenger touchscreen.
Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, with the passenger able to stream movies on the move without distracting the driver.
Like the battery-powered A6 e-tron, the combustion-powered sibling comes with a dynamic sunroof that can switch from clear to translucent at the touch of a button and also has a slatted pergola mode.
A four-zone climate control that includes cabin air filtration tech is also available, plus a 3D Bang & Olufsen sound system that features speakers mounted in the headrests.
Claimed to be much better to drive than the car it replaces, the new A6 Avant has a stiffer torsion bar and control arm bushings, a more rigid steering rack and increased front camber.
The mild-hybrid TDI, meanwhile, gets more sophisticated brake-by-wire system that is said to seamlessly blend real mechanical and regenerative braking.
On sale in Europe now, the first deliveries of the Audi A6 Avant in Europe will kick off this May, with the entry TFSI turbo-petrol priced from €58,000 ($A98,000).
From launch a sporty S line trim will be offered that combines 19-inch wheels, 20mm lower sports suspension and sporty cues within the interior.
If you're wondering where the A6 sedan is, that car will launch is a few months' time, say Audi.
