2025 BMW M3 freshens up with big power hike

Mid-size German sports sedan and wagon updated with revised headlights and new alloy wheels

Following in the footsteps of its upgraded BMW M4 Coupe sibling, the facelifted 2025 BMW M3 sedan and 2025 BMW M3 Touring will bring a host of updates aimed at broadening the appeal of the Audi RS 4 and Mercedes-AMG C 63 S rival when first Australian deliveries commence in late 2024.

The headline news is that all-wheel drive versions of the revised G80 BMW M3 Competition sedan and G81 BMW M3 Touring Competition now produce significantly more power, with the total output raised from 375kW to a more substantial 390kW for both all-wheel drive variants.

Despite pumping out more power, the twin-turbo 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder still produces the same 650Nm torque peak, but maximum twist is now produced from 2750rpm to 5750rpm – the latter up from 5500rpm. An eight-speed automatic carries over as the standard transmission.

Even with the extra might, BMW M says its high-performance mid-size luxury sedan still launches from 0-100km/h in the same 3.5 seconds, while the Touring version also has a carryover claimed 0-100km/h time of 3.6sec.

But the German car-maker says the extra engine performance makes its impression from 0-200km/h, with the M3 Comp now taking a claimed 11.8sec and the wagon 12.4sec – 0.5 less than before.

The rear-wheel drive M3 models, meanwhile, still deliver the same 353kW/550Nm outputs as before, and the option of a six-speed manual is still available even though it’s been dropped in some markets.

Externally, it’s tricky to distinguish the overhauled M3 model range from the line-up it replaces, but there are new forged silver alloy wheels and revised headlights, the latter featuring a different arrowhead arrangement for the daytime running lights to create a more striking look.

Inside, there’s a new flat-bottomed steering wheel and the introduction of an upgraded infotainment system with the latest BMW Operating System 8.5.

BMW Australia is yet to announce pricing or exact release timing for the new 2025 BMW M3 and M3 Touring, but full details will be released closer to their local arrival in the second half of 2024.
