2025 BMW X3 previewed as development wraps up

Bigger and sleeker new mid-size luxury SUV promises major improvements over its predecessor

First official images and details of the next-generation 2025 BMW X3 have been released ahead of its global debut later this year.

Wider and with a sleeker silhouette, the 2025 BMW X3 has so far been previewed in plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and M Performance guises, with the latter set to adopt the ‘M50’ name instead of the current ‘M40i’ designation – no doubt reflective of the extra performance over its brings over its predecessor.

BMW claims to have reduced the drag coefficient of its all-new mid-size SUV from 0.29 to 0.27Cd in the name of fuel-efficiency, thanks in part to the slipperier roofline, more enclosed front-end design and smoother flanks, all of which will no doubt increase the electric range of PHEV variants.

Speaking of which, BMW says the electrified version(s) will have an upgraded battery with a higher net energy capacity that will extend the electric cruising range, but whether or not there’ll be new motors to match remains to be seen.

All X3 variants will come with a more rigid body shell paired with a stiffer chassis set-up – more advanced anti-roll bars, more front wheel caster – and more aggressive steering tune, with adaptive dampers to once again be offered optionally.

The M Performance version(s) will predictably take things a lot further, and judging by the quad exhaust outlets and XM-inspired rear-end, it seems their extra performance will be broadcast more loudly.

Other hot touches include the obligatory gaping intakes up front, unique rear apron, lowered ride height, extended side skirts, low-profile tyres and feisty alloy wheel design, behind which are a set of M-spec brakes.

With the core development program now complete, BMW engineers are now fine-tuning the new X3’s chassis and driver-assists systems at the BMW Group test centre at Miramas in southern France.

Headline driver aids include active lane change assistant and the parking and manoeuvre assistant, which can be operated from outside the vehicle via a smartphone.
