The 2025 BYD Sealion 7 has just been approved for sale in Australia, with two variants primed to make up the initial portfolio come February when the battery-electric SUV hits the market.
Unsurprisingly, the two variants will be split primarily by their powertrains – single- and dual-motor – and equipment levels, likely opting for the same Premium and Performance nameplates as seen in the local BYD Seal range.
But where the existing Sealion 6 is a plug-in hybrid wagon, the Sealion 7 is a swoopier battery-electric coupe-SUV like the Tesla Model Y.
According to the just-published ADR certification data, the single-motor Sealion 7 will be rear-wheel drive and output 230kW, almost certainly drawing current from an 81kWh Blade battery pack as per the Chinese market.
The dual-motor meantime will be all-wheel drive, pump out a mighty 390kW and feature the same battery pack.
There’s no sign of a WLTP or ADR-certified cruising range for either variant just yet, but overseas data points to a range of 550-610km depending on the variant – probably against the more lenient CLTC cycle.
The homologation data doesn’t tell us much about either variant’s standard equipment levels, however we do know the Premium will ride on 19-inch wheels as standard while the Performance will nab 20s shod with slightly wider and probably stickier rubber.
Both versions will come with sizeable 368mm x 32mm ventilated front brake rotors and solid 317mm x 20mm rear discs.
Pricing and local specification details will be announced closer to the Sealion 7’s local arrival next quarter – likely mere minutes before it goes on sale.
Odds are the Sealion 7 will be more expensive than the PHEV Sealion 6 wagon it’ll coexist in local showrooms with, but cheaper than the Model Y it’s intended to dethrone, pointing to a circa-$52,000 starting price (plus on-road costs).
All will be revealed in February.
