The 2025 BYD Sealion 7 electric SUV has officially been priced for Australia, just days after local specs were leaked on social media.
On sale now, the two-variant Sealion 7 line-up kicks off from $54,990 plus on-road costs for the entry-level Premium and $63,990 for the top-spec dual-motor Performance.
That sees it narrowly undercut the most affordable Tesla Model Y ($55,900), but it can’t quite match fellow Chinese newcomer, the XPeng G6, which starts from $54,800 plus on-road costs.
The new mid-size SUV sits above the Atto 3 in BYD’s portfolio and will offer a claimed driving range of up to 482km for Premium and 456km for Performance, with both versions featuring a 82.56kWh lithium-iron phosphate battery.
Australian BYD distributor EVDirect’s CEO, David Smitherman, said interest the in Toyota RAV4-sized family SUV has been 'nothing short of incredible'.
"A little over a month ago, we put out an expression of interest on our website … and over 5000 people have registered interest,” he said.
Smitherman confirmed more than 180 sales in the first couple of hours after the order book officially opened and was confident of seeing around 1000 orders for the new family SUV within 24 hours.
The EVDirect CEO told carsales he expects the Sealion 7 to become the third best-selling BYD in Australia in 2025, behind the dominant Shark and the petrol-electric Sealion 6 SUV – which is roughly the same size as the Sealion 7.
Powering the entry-level offering is a 230kW/380Nm electric motor (mounted to the rear axle) which gifts it a 0-100km/h time of 6.7 seconds, a time slashed down to 4.5 seconds by the 390kW/690Nm Performance.
Vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality will come as standard, as will a host of safety and driver assistance aids, including autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, rear cross traffic alert, blind spot monitoring, driver attention monitoring, safe exit warning, surround-view camera, front and rear parking sensors, and more.
Other standard inclusions on the Sealion 7 Premium include:
On top of the extra firepower, the Performance adds:
