Chery Australia has detailed its refreshed C5 SUV range, which arrives in showrooms this month with a simplified lineup, new naming conventions, and an increased starting price for its base-spec model.
Confusingly, the Chinese car-maker shook things up in March, when it announced the Omoda 5 – the first model to arrive when Chery returned to the Aussie market in 2022 – would be renamed the C5.
At the same time, the electric Omoda 5, originally dubbed Omoda E5, was renamed simply E5.
The decision – which included the news that Omoda would become a sub-brand of Chery as opposed to a model name – was to help align Australia to Chery’s global strategy.
Now, the small SUV range has been somewhat simplified, with just two variants to be available in the 2025 model-year range, comprising the C5 Urban ($29,990 drive away) and the C5 Ultimate ($34,990 drive away).
That marks a $2000 increase on the entry price compared to the outgoing model, while the new flagship Ultimate grade shaves $2K off the previously range-topping EX ($36,990 drive away).
Exterior styling tweaks come in the form of a revised diamond-shaped grille, while the Ultimate variant brings newly designed 18-inch alloy wheels. Cargo capacity across the range has been increased to 370 litres (up by 10L).
Further changes include a new multi-link rear suspension setup (replacing the torsion beam), while the Omoda 5’s continuously variable transmission has been swapped out for a six-speed dual-clutch transmission.
No changes have been made to the SUV’s engine, a 108kW 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol unit that sends power exclusively to the front wheels.
Standard equipment in the entry-level C5 Urban includes 17-inch alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights (DRLs), seven airbags, a pair of 10.25-inch digital screens, a six-speaker sound system, and a full suite of safety and driver-assistance aids.
The top-spec Ultimate adds larger 18-inch alloys in gloss black, red brake calipers, an electric tailgate, leather-appointed seats with heating up front, dual-zone climate control, a 50W wireless phone charging pad, eight-speaker sound system, powered sunroof, and a 360-degree camera.
