The 2024 Deepal S06 electric medium SUV has been priced from $53,900 plus on-road costs, becoming the latest market newcomer to undercut the Tesla Model Y.
With the first customer cars due early next month, Deepal Australia will initially operate out of four key retail centres: Paramatta, North Shore, Melbourne City and Doncaster, all of which will open their doors on Monday (November 11).
Just a single variant is being offered from launch, namely a single-motor, rear-wheel drive offering outputting 160kW/320Nm and capable of up to 475km (WLTP) on a single charge of its 80kWh nickel-manganese cobalt battery.
Headline equipment on the lone, eponymously-named variant includes 19-inch alloy wheels, synthetic leather upholstery, heated and cooled front seats, dual-zone climate control, a 14-speaker Sony sound system, gesture control, powered tailgate, a tilting 15.6-inch infotainment interface, an augmented reality head-up display, nap mode and keyless entry.
All the usual active safety systems like autonomous braking (forward and reverse), blind spot warning, side exit warning, speed sign recognition, lane keep assist and lane change assist are all present too.
“Road trips are great adventures, but it’s important to balance driving with rest,” Deepal Australia Cormac Cafolla said.
“Deepal has invented a ‘nap mode’ in the S07 so that when you pull over for a break, all the vehicle occupants are not only kept cool, but the vehicle also locks the doors and plays soothing sounds of the rain or ocean.
“One of my favourite things to do since getting behind the wheel of the S07 is to take my wife to her favourite drive-through dessert place and enjoy them in the car while the bonfire mode is crackling away.”
All S07s purchased before January 31 will come with a 12-month Evie charging subscription included in the asking price.
Warranty coverage is good for seven years/160,000km on the vehicle itself while the battery is covered for eight years/240,000km – 12 months roadside assist is also offered.
Service intervals are pegged at 10,000km or every 12 months (whichever comes first) after the initial 5000km/six-month service.
Deepal Australia has confirmed it’s studying the possible introduction of a BYD-baiting plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version of the S07 given the ongoing surge in hybrid demand and cooling EV sales.
Other products on the horizon include the wacky E07 SUV-cum-ute, G318 off-roader, S05 compact SUV and L07 mid-sized sedan.
