The wild 2024 Genesis GV60 Magma Concept has been locked in for production and the high-output luxury EV will be in showrooms by the end of next year.
Based on the existing Genesis GV60 small electric SUV, the high-performance GV60 Magma was shown in concept form at the New York motor show in March and made its dynamic debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed yesterday, piloted by Jacky Ickx.
However, Genesis Motors today confirmed the first in a series of Magma models, which could compete directly with Audi RS, BMW M and Mercedes-AMG vehicles, will enter production in the third quarter of 2025.
That means the GV60 Magma is likely to arrive in Australia by early 2026, armed with similar performance hardware to the bigger but less upmarket Hyundai IONIQ 5 N.
Technical details are thin on the ground for now, but the GV60 Magma’s N ties should see it pack an 84kWh battery pack and a dual-motor drivetrain good for 478kW/770Nm, plus variable torque split and virtual gearshift functions and myriad other performance goodies.
“To enhance stability during sporty driving, the car has been widened and lowered, giving it a more dynamic stance and allowing for a lower centre of gravity,” Genesis said.
“The GV60 Magma, set to hit sales in Korea next year as an EV model, will closely resemble the concept model, with necessary modifications made to comply with regional regulations.”
That confirms our long-held suspicion that the concept is virtually a production-spec vehicle, especially given prototypes have been spotted rolling on IONIQ 5 N wheels and an N-branded brake package.
Pricing will undoubtedly start north of $130,000, given the Performance AWD flagship of the existing two-variant GV60 range costs $111,000 plus ORCs (like the IONIQ 5 N), although that figure will likely increase with the release of the facelifted model that’s anticipated to debut alongside the production-spec Magma.
Much like Kia’s GT portfolio and Hyundai’s N line-up, Genesis’ new Magma EV range will yield the fastest, most aggressive and sportiest models in the premium Korean auto brand’s model family, in a bid to rattle the cages of Audi Sport, Mercedes-AMG and BMW M.
“Compared to the existing line-up, production models within the Genesis Magma program will be equipped with various specialised features aimed at enhancing the joy of sporty driving while ensuring effortless comfort,” said Genesis.
“Magma models will exhibit a wider and lower body design, paired with exclusive chassis and suspension components that have been thoughtfully engineered to elevate overall performance and provide an unmatched driving sensation unique to Magma vehicles.”
Naturally, the Genesis GV60 Magma’s hero colour is bright orange.
