2025 GWM Cannon here within weeks

Upgraded Chinese workhorse is only weeks away from showrooms

The Australian-spec 2025 GWM Cannon has been revealed with new styling, a more powerful turbo-diesel engine, a greater towing capacity and more cabin tech.

The new model has inherited the gutsier 2.4-litre turbo-diesel of the larger Cannon Alpha (135kW/480Nm), translating to a 15kW/80Nm gain over the lacklustre 2.0-litre offered pre-update, as well as the in-house-developed nine-speed automatic transmission.

With the extra torque, the Cannon can now match the top-selling Ford Ranger for tugging might, with the braked towing capacity increasing from 3200kg to 3500kg.

To help tell the new model apart from the old one, designers have refined the ute’s front fascia, wheelarches and tailgate with less chrome, sharper lines and emblazoned ‘GWM’ lettering respectively.

No images of the overhauled cabin have yet been released but the Chinese brand says there’s more premium materials within, more advanced technology and “enhanced comfort features”.

It’s thought the Cannon will boast similar tech to what’s already available on Chinese versions, things like a free-standing 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster and a large 12.3-inch infotainment screen that cuts the button count.

A new steering wheel will also be present, plus a gear-shifter borrowed from the Tank 300 SUV that will live behind a rotary controller for the infotainment system.

Locally, GWM hopes that the arrival of the facelifted Cannon will turn around a 15.1 per cent sales slump that saw just 7976 examples of the aspiring Ford Ranger rival find homes in 2024 compared to 9363 sales the year before.

That said, GWM shifted an impressive 42,782 vehicles in in 2024 making it Australia’s tenth-most-popular car brand.

To clear the deck ahead of the 2025 GWM Cannon launch, the outgoing model has been priced from just $35,490 drive-away to $46,990 drive-away with further discounts of up to $6000 offered on some models until January 31.
