The 2025 GWM Cannon ute range has expanded in Australia to include three new models, with two of them – the new Cannon Premium Single Cab Chassis 4x2 and Cannon Premium Dual Cab pick-up 4x4 – serving as the new entry point to the line-up.
The two ‘Premium’ variants are powered by the 2.0-litre turbo-diesel (120kW/400Nm) that was originally available in the GMW Ute before it was renamed the Cannon, and once again it is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The rest of the range remains powered by a 2.4-litre turbo-diesel paired with a nine-speed auto and a 4x4 driveline.
On sale now, the Cannon Premium Single Cab Chassis 4x2 is priced from $35,490 drive away, while the Cannon Premium Dual Cab pick-up 4x4 is priced from $39,490 drive away.
As well as the new Premium grade variants, a second cab-chassis variant will now be available in the Lux trim with the larger 2.4-litre turbo-diesel (135kW/480Nm). It’s priced from $42,490 drive away – $2500 more than the old GMW Ute that was available as a dual-cab chassis.
The Premium grade comes with 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlamps, keyless entry, body-coloured arches, and underbody armour.
Within, there are six-way manual-adjust faux leather seats, single-zone climate control, a 12.3-inch touch-screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as a 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster and a multi-function steering wheel with paddle-shifters.
When it comes to safety aids, there’s adaptive cruise control, seven airbags, a reverse camera, rear parking sensors, autonomous emergency braking, traffic sign assist and driver fatigue monitoring.
The disadvantage of the lower-powered turbo-diesel is it can’t quite tug as much as the punchier 2.4, with the 2.0-litre limited to a 3200kg maximum towing capacity (down from 3500kg for the 2.4-litre).
However, the entry-level Cannon Premium Single Cab Chassis 4x2 returns a more frugal 7.6L/100km, versus 8.1L/100km for the Premium Dual Cab pick-up and 8.4L/100km for the Cannon Lux Dual Cab Chassis.
The advantage of the single-cab is it has an extended wheelbase (3470mm versus 3230mm for other variants) that’s said to improve load distribution and the drive, while its payload also increases to 1150kg – 155kg higher than the other versions with the 2.4-litre engine.
Prices across the rest of the range remain around $1000 higher than at launch.
